Puma FUTURE 7 Review

When Puma announced the release of the FUTURE 7 Ultimate, I must admit, my first thought was, “Here we go, another FUTURE iteration.” There seems to be another updated version every few weeks. But Puma’s knack for pushing boundaries and their relentless pursuit to refine and enhance performance on the pitch continues to pique my curiosity.

Puma’s evolution of their boot technology is a meticulous process of innovation aimed at elevating the player’s game. And true to form, the FUTURE 7 Ultimate does not disappoint.

A Shift in PWRTAPE Design: A Game Changer?

The most noticeable change in the FUTURE 7 Ultimate is the strategic relocation and redesign of the PWRTAPE to a Y-shaped configuration. Initially, I was skeptical. Why change something that already seemed to work quite well? The answer became clear once I laced them up. As it turns out, it is more than just a cosmetic tweak. Puma has incorporated it as a functional upgrade that significantly impacts the boot’s performance.

This Y-design fundamentally changes how the boot feels and behaves on your foot. By redistributing the stretch and lockdown across a broader area, it allows for a more secure yet flexible fit. This adaptation means that the boot accommodates natural foot movements more effectively, enhancing both comfort and stability – a crucial factor during high-stakes moments on the field.

Puma FUTURE 7 Upper Texture Touch and Control

Touch: Mastering Control with PWRPRINT

In the quest to dominate the field with unrivaled ball control, the Puma FUTURE 7 Ultimate introduces an innovative feature set to captivate and elevate the touch of playmakers: the PWRPRINT technology. This advanced texturing across the upper employs what can only be described as an array of diamond-shaped decals, meticulously placed to not only enhance grip on the ball but to bring a visually stunning shimmer effect to the boot’s surface. This intricacy in design is not merely aesthetic; it plays a pivotal role in the way players interact with the ball, offering an augmented grip that can change the game’s dynamics with a single touch.

What sets the PWRPRINT apart is its strategic implementation across the boot. Puma ingeniously integrates areas devoid of texturing, with the most notable being a high-contact zone located above the big toe on the forefoot. This deliberate design choice ensures that players can experience both the enhanced grip where needed and smooth, unhindered contact in areas where the touch needs to be as natural as possible.

Enhanced Fit: Comfort Meets Performance

Speaking of fit, the FUTURE 7 takes it to another level. The previous models were impressive, but this iteration feels like it’s been tailored to your foot. The adjustment in the PWRTAPE design, coupled with the ultra-stretchy knit upper, allows for a more natural stretch and fit. It’s snug without being restrictive, offering a bespoke fit that seems to adapt to your foot’s shape and movements.

This enhanced fit doesn’t just improve comfort; it boosts confidence on the pitch. There’s a noticeable difference in how these boots respond to quick directional changes, sprints, and even those subtle movements that can mean the difference between maintaining possession and losing it. The FUTURE 7 feels like an extension of your foot, offering a level of responsiveness that truly stands out.

Soleplate and Traction

The soleplate of the Puma FUTURE ULTIMATE encapsulates a dynamic blend of innovation and performance. The Dual-Density Motion System outsole, characterized by its distinctive split composition, contributes to the cleat’s standout traction and agility. From the moment you step onto the pitch, you’ll feel the soleplate’s responsiveness, designed to support every twist, turn, and burst of speed.

The mix of conical and bladed studs underfoot offers a strategic balance between stability and maneuverability. On natural grass surfaces, the conical studs penetrate the turf, providing reliable traction as you navigate the pitch. These studs are strategically positioned to support multi-directional movements, ensuring you can execute quick changes of direction with confidence.

Why the Puma FUTURE 7 is Perfect for Playmakers

The Puma FUTURE 7 is engineered with the art of playmaking in mind. Its design innovations provide the precision, control, and agility required by players who orchestrate the game. The FUZIONFIT360 system, featuring a new Y-shaped PWRTAPE, offers unmatched foot lockdown, allowing for natural movement and stability without sacrificing comfort. This ensures playmakers can execute their vision with precise footwork and control.

The boot’s adaptive knit upper stretches for a custom fit, enhancing the playmaker’s feel and touch, crucial for controlling the game’s tempo. With 3D grip textures, the FUTURE 7 elevates ball handling, enabling accurate passes and dribbles under pressure. Its lightweight Dynamic Motion System outsole supports explosive agility, making it easier for playmakers to create space and opportunities on the pitch.

In essence, the Puma FUTURE 7 combines the latest in boot technology to support the playmaker’s need for a boot that responds to their strategic moves, making it the ultimate choice for those who aim to control the game with every touch.

The Verdict: Worth the Upgrade?

After spending significant time with the FUTURE 7 Ultimate, I’ve come to appreciate the thoughtful design and technological advancements Puma has incorporated into this model. The changes offer tangible benefits that enhance your playing experience.

The move to a Y-shaped PWRTAPE design is a testament to Puma’s commitment to evolving their products to meet the needs of modern players. It’s a clever blend of form and function that results in superior lockdown and fit. Coupled with the 3D grip textures for unmatched ball control and the Dynamic Motion System outsole for explosive agility, the FUTURE 7 is a compelling option for any player looking to elevate their game.

So, to answer the initial skepticism: Yes, this is “another FUTURE release,” but it’s one that brings meaningful innovations to the table. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or considering your first pair of Puma boots, the FUTURE 7 merits serious consideration. Puma continues to impress with their commitment to improvement, making the FUTURE 7 not just a new release, but a new standard in soccer footwear.

Speed redefined and expectations surpassed – that’s the expectation with a release like the adidas X Crazyfast+. Right? What I’ve discovered is that they are a release that ventures into the realm of specialized performance, tailored for a certain breed of player. Draped in a captivating solar blue colorway, accented with softer hues of baby blue and white, they stand out not just in appearance but in their purposeful design. The shimmering effect on the single-layer monomesh upper hints at a deeper commitment to detail and functionality by adidas.

In my time testing them, I’ve come to appreciate their niche appeal. They’re not a one-size-fits-all solution; rather, they’re a carefully crafted option for players who seek a specific kind of on-field experience. This review is set to explore the unique attributes of the X Crazyfast+, from their snug embrace to the innovative soleplate. They may not be the universal answer for every player, but for those who find their fit within the X Crazyfast+‘s distinct design, there’s a lot to be excited about. Let’s dive into what makes these boots a potential game-changer for the right player.

Initial Reaction: A Shift in Perspective

When I first unboxed the adidas X Crazyfast+, I was intrigued by their lightweight build and sleek design. They seemed like they could easily be the next best thing in lightweight performance. Could adidas merge the best of modern innovation (especially in the upper materials) with a lightweight construction to produce a standout? Holding them for the first time, they definitely create an air of excitement! As I’ve spent more time on the field with them, my perspective has evolved, especially regarding their fit, comfort, and performance. And we will talk more about that below.

adidas X Crazyfast+ FG

adidas X Crazyfast+ Soccer Cleats 2024

Comfort and Fit: A Leap into Synthetic Evolution

The adidas X Crazyfast+ takes us on an intriguing journey with its AEROPACITY Speedskin+ upper, marking a significant shift from traditional cleat materials. This synthetic isn’t just another iteration of what we’ve seen before – it’s a complete overhaul. The material has a unique texture, almost crusty to the touch, reminiscent of paper that’s been soaked and dried. It holds a certain rigidity, a deliberate choice by adidas to blend durability with an ultra-thin, second-skin connection to the ball.

But what does this mean for comfort and fit? The X Crazyfast+ wraps your feet in a surprisingly snug embrace. Gone are the days of spacious forefoot areas typical of older adidas models. Instead, these cleats offer a fit reminiscent of Nike’s Mercurial Vapor series – tight, with a lower profile across the toes. The upper’s structured nature means it maintains its shape without much give or stretch, so don’t expect them to loosen up much as you break them in. For those like myself who typically wear a size 9US, sizing up half a size could be a wise decision for a more comfortable fit.

adidas X Crazyfast+ Thin Upper

Crazyfast Upper Design

X Crazyfast+ FG

The True Second Skin Experience

In terms of on-ball feel, the X Crazyfast+ shines. The ultra-thin nature of the Speedskin+ upper translates to an extraordinary sensation – every touch, dribble, and impact is keenly felt. This heightened sense of connection with the ball is unparalleled, offering an almost raw, unfiltered interaction during play. It’s a double-edged sword, though – while you gain superior touch sensitivity, you also feel every stud from an opponent’s challenge more acutely.

Ease of Wear with Thoughtful Design

A simple standout feature is the non-integrated tongue, a seemingly minor detail that significantly impacts the overall experience. This design choice enhances the ease of slipping the cleats on and off – a notable convenience that players will appreciate, especially when preparing for intense training sessions or crucial matches.

The tongue itself is ingeniously crafted. Its ultra-thin profile doesn’t just contribute to the cleat’s lightweight feel; it also integrates perforations. This clever design ensures enhanced breathability, a crucial factor during high-energy play. The perforated tongue allows for increased airflow, helping to keep your feet cool and comfortable even under the pressure of the game. Even more importantly, the non-integrated tongue design plays a role in customizing fit. It provides flexibility in lacing, allowing players to adjust the snugness around their midfoot to their preference. Whether you prefer a tighter feel for more security or a looser fit for added comfort, the X Crazyfast+ accommodates your style.

Heel Comfort: A Delightful Surprise

Despite their feather-light weight, adidas hasn’t compromised on heel comfort. The ample padding in the heel area is a standout feature, ensuring a cushioned and secure lockdown. This thoughtful addition means players can engage in dynamic play without the worry of blisters or discomfort commonly associated with lighter boots.

adidas X Crazyfast+ Soleplate

Aggressive Traction for Dynamic Play

The Speedframe AEROPLATE soleplate on the adidas X Crazyfast+ is a game-changer in terms of traction. It may have a minimalist appearance, but its performance on the pitch is anything but. Initially, you’ll notice a certain rigidity when you step onto the field. This isn’t a flaw; it’s a feature. As you break them in, this rigidity evolves into a dynamic springiness, a kind of energetic responsiveness that you can feel with every movement.

This soleplate isn’t just about supporting rapid movements, it’s there to enhance them. The way it transitions from a solid base to a source of lively propulsion is impressive. You get this lively, energetic pop with every push-off from the ground, which is crucial during those split-second decisions and rapid changes in direction. On firm ground and artificial surfaces, the Speedframe AEROPLATE shows its true colors. It provides an exceptional grip, a crucial factor for players who rely on quick, agile maneuvers. The soleplate ensures that whether you’re making a quick turn or sprinting towards the goal, your cleats are firmly anchored, giving you the confidence to play your best.

Comparison with Previous Models

X Ghosted: The X Crazyfast+ builds on the Ghosted with a thinner, more adaptable upper while retaining the responsive soleplate. It feels less restrictive and offers a closer touch on the ball.
Speedportal+: Compared to the more cushioned Speedportal+, the Crazyfast+ prioritizes lightweight speed and direct ball touch, providing a rawer, more barefoot-like experience.

Durability Insights

AEROPACITY Speedskin+: While thin and lightweight, this upper is surprisingly durable thanks to its TPU reinforcements and woven structure. However, expect more scuffing on firm ground surfaces and some potential tearing with aggressive play styles.
Soleplate: The Pebax® PowerFrame plate is known for its responsiveness and flexibility, but like most lightweight plates, it may not hold up as well on hard, uneven grounds.
Overall Durability: Expect decent lifespan on natural grass pitches, but be cautious on artificial surfaces. Regular care and maintenance will extend the boots’ life.

Performance in Different Weather Conditions

Rain: The Speedskin+ sheds water well, maintaining grip and feel. However, the thin upper lacks insulation, making them colder in chilly weather.
Extreme Heat: The lightweight construction provides breathability, but the dark colors can absorb heat in intense sun.

Final Thoughts: Balancing Performance and Fit

The adidas X Crazyfast+ is a cleat that presents a unique blend of attributes and challenges. It excels with its ease of wear, exceptional heel comfort, and the assertive grip of its soleplate, making it a standout option for speed and agility. However, the snug fit and limited stretch of the upper material might pose a concern for some players. My recommendation? Opt for a half size larger to ensure a more accommodating fit.

This cleat is tailored for players who seek a lightweight, performance-driven boot and are willing to navigate the nuances of its fit. For those ready to embrace its speedy nature with a mindful approach to sizing, the adidas X Crazyfast+ could be a thrilling addition to your soccer gear.

Nike Premier 3 FG Review

Forget shimmering synthetics and blaring tech. In a world obsessed with the next big innovation, the Nike Premier III dares to whisper a different language.

Crafted from pure, unadulterated kangaroo leather, we’ll dissect the Premier III’s every stitch, from the luxurious feel of the leather against your foot to the way the conical studs grip the earth like dancers embracing the stage. Is it a whisper lost in the roar of progress, or a forgotten melody that still holds the power to move? In this review, we’ll uncover the truth: can the magic of touch transcend trends and triumph over technology?

Get ready to rediscover the art of control. The Premier III awaits. Let’s dance!

Fit and Comfort

Classic Fit: The Premier III boasts a true-to-size fit, ideal for medium-width feet. Wide-footed players might require some break-in time.
Snug and Secure: The kangaroo leather upper molds closely to your foot, offering a locked-in feel for precise control.
Moderate Arch Support: The insole provides comfortable support for most arches, but high-arched players might prefer additional inserts.
Spacious Toe Box: Plenty of room for toe splay keeps your feet happy during sprints and maneuvers.
Personal Preferences: If you favor a snug, responsive fit, you’ll love the Premier III. Wider-footed players or those who prefer a plusher feel might consider alternatives.

Nike Premier 3 Soccer Cleats

Material Analysis and Durability

Premium Kangaroo Leather: This upper exudes luxury with its buttery soft texture and exceptional touch. Its natural breathability keeps your feet cool and comfortable.
Long-Term Durability: While kangaroo leather excels in feel and performance, it requires care. Expect scuffing and potential tears on firm ground over time. Regular cleaning and conditioning are essential.
Durable Soleplate: The TPU soleplate combines flexibility for comfort with sufficient rigidity for responsive movements. Its conical studs offer excellent traction on natural grass.

Soleplate and Traction

Conical Studs: Featuring low-profile, conical studs, this configuration provides consistent grip on natural grass pitches, allowing for confident cuts, turns, and accelerations.
Firmness and Flexibility: The soleplate balances firmness for stability with enough flexibility for smooth transitions and comfort.
Surface Suitability: These cleats excel on natural grass. While playable on firm ground, the conical studs might lack grip on artificial turf. Consider alternatives for predominantly playing on synthetic surfaces.

Break-In Period and Ease of Wear

Expect a 2-3 week break-in period as the kangaroo leather conforms to your foot. Wear thin socks to accelerate the process.
Initial snugness: The snug fit might feel stiff initially, especially for wider feet. Gradually increase wear time to avoid discomfort.
Tips for Break-In: Stuffing the cleats with paper for a few days can soften the leather. Wearing them around the house for short periods can also ease the transition.

Nike Premier 3 Features

Performance in Different Weather Conditions

Dry Conditions: King of the pitch: Conical studs dig deep into dry grass, letting you explode off the line, change direction on a dime, and master pinpoint control. No slipping or sliding here!
Wet Conditions: Waterlogged woes: While the studs hold up decently, the leather absorbs water, adding weight and potentially dampening your touch. Precision might waver a bit on soggy pitches.

Aesthetic Appeal

Timeless Design: The Premier III retains the classic kangaroo leather silhouette with a minimalist, understated elegance. The iconic Nike Swoosh appears discreetly on the heel and tongue, prioritizing performance over flashy logos.
Bold Colorways: Choose from striking options like “Black/White/Volt” or “Hyper Crimson/Black/White” to stand out on the pitch.

Durability Insights

High-Contact Areas: Expect scuffing and potential tears on the toe box and instep, especially on firm ground. Regular cleaning and conditioning can extend their lifespan.
Playing Surface Impact: Avoid frequent use on artificial turf, as the conical studs might wear faster or damage the synthetic surface.
Comparison with Similar Cleats: Compared to synthetic leather offerings, kangaroo leather requires more care but offers superior touch and comfort. Consider the trade-off based on your priorities.

Comparison with Previous Models

Lighter Weight: Compared to the Premium II, the III boasts a slightly lighter weight thanks to a thinner soleplate, enhancing agility and acceleration.
Softer Leather: The kangaroo leather on the III feels noticeably softer and more pliable than the II, offering a more luxurious touch and improved comfort.
Refined Fit: The II’s snug fit has been slightly adjusted in the III to provide a more accommodating feel around the midfoot and toe box.

Player Feedback

Pros: Players praise the exceptional touch, responsive feel, and timeless design. The comfortable fit and breathability are also appreciated.
Cons: Concerns about long-term durability on firm ground and high-maintenance nature of the leather have been raised. Wider-footed players might initially find the fit snug.

Recommendations Based on Playing Style

Strikers and Playmakers: Nike highlight close touch and precise control of the kangaroo leather, making them ideal for strikers and playmakers who rely on impacting the game when it matters most.
Midfielders: The lightweight construction and responsive soleplate enhance agility and quick changes of direction, making them suitable for midfielders.
Defenders: While not ideal for tackling due to the thin leather, the conical studs offer decent grip for interceptions and covering ground. Consider sturdier options for aggressive defenders.

Value for Money

More bang for your buck: At $120, the Premier III might seem pricey, but the premium kangaroo leather, exceptional touch, and timeless design offer tremendous value compared to other high-end cleats. You’re investing in quality that performs and lasts.
Investment in your game: Think of the Premier III as an investment in your on-field performance. The precise touch, responsive soleplate, and durable construction can elevate your game and unlock your full potential.
Sweet deals await: While $120 might seem hefty at first glance, keep your eyes peeled for sales and discounts. These beauties can be snagged at even better prices, making them a steal for performance-focused players.
Worth the upgrade: Compared to synthetic leather options that might cost less upfront, the Premier III’s superior touch, comfort, and long-term durability offer far greater value in the long run. You’ll get what you pay for, and then some.

Overall

Strikers, playmakers, and touch maestros, listen up: The Nike Premier III FG is your weapon of choice. Kangaroo leather whispers control, the conical studs dance on natural grass, and the timeless design commands respect. Sure, they require some break-in love and extra care, but for players who prioritize feel over flashy tech, the Premier III delivers. They might not be for everyone, but if you’re a purist on a budget, look no further.

Diadora Brasil OG LT+

In the realm of football boots, few names evoke the same sense of history and reverence as Diadora. With a legacy that spans decades, Diadora has consistently delivered classic craftsmanship, elevating football boots to an art form. The Diadora Brasil OG LT+ stands as a testament to this legacy, a cleat that pays homage to tradition while embracing the demands of the modern game.

As the name suggests, the Brasil OG LT+ draws inspiration from Diadora’s renowned “Made in Italy” lineage, a testament to the brand’s dedication to creating boots that blend heritage with innovation. These cleats seamlessly capture the essence of a brand that has left an indelible mark on the sport, with each pair representing a tangible link between the past and the present.

Initial Reaction

Right out of the box, the Diadora Brasil OG LT+ captivates with its timeless and iconic appearance. The soft premium leather construction, adorned with strategic stitching across the forefoot vamp, creates a striking blend of elegance and performance. These cleats exude a sense of classic style that echoes the heritage of Diadora’s renowned craftsmanship.

Unique Fold Over Tongue

One of the standout features that immediately draws you into the Diadora Brasil OG LT+ is its unique and unmistakable fold-over tongue. This design element is more than just a functional aspect; it’s a tangible connection to the boot’s storied past and a salute to the timeless classics that have graced the pitch for generations.

When you slip your foot into a pair and lace up, you’ll immediately notice how the fold-over tongue, secured firmly by an elastic strap, enhances the boot’s fit. Wrapping snugly around the midfoot, the strap ensures the tongue remains stable and in position, preventing any unwelcome movement or sliding during those pivotal moments in a match. This not only optimizes comfort but also ensures consistent ball touch, allowing players to focus entirely on their game without any distractions.

Diadora Brasil OG LT+ FG Fold Over Tongue

Fit and Sizing

When it comes to fit, the Brasil OG LT+ offers a slightly longer fit but maintains a balance that avoids the need for sizing adjustments. It’s a fitting tribute to the fact that footballers of the past often prioritized a bit of extra room in their boots — a little breathing space that allowed for natural movement on the pitch. This sizing characteristic doesn’t just reflect a design choice; it’s a testament to the understanding that comfort is essential for optimal performance.

Wearing them in a size 9US, I discovered that they provide a comfortable fit that accommodates various foot shapes. Notably, the cleats feature a spacious cavity through the forefoot, and the premium leather upper possesses a stretch factor. This aspect is particularly appealing to players seeking a more accommodating fit. Comparing them to sleeker silos like the Mizuno Alpha Japan FG, the Diadora’s wider fit offers a marked contrast, yet transitioning between the two styles didn’t disrupt my play experience.

Performance and Playing Style

The stitching design across the forefoot of the Brasil OG LT+ introduces a level of cushioned definition that elevates its performance capabilities. While one might associate this traditional-style boot with a defensive mindset, the benefits extend beyond that niche. These cleats are built to withstand the test of time, providing added padding for tackles and a no-nonsense approach.

As you dribble with the ball, you’ll experience a touch that’s cushioned and comfortable, although it’s worth noting that the padding provided by the stitching takes away a bit of that natural, barefoot-like sensation. This isn’t a boot that prioritizes flashy tricks and flicks; it’s a boot that’s all about getting the job done efficiently and effectively.

Players in need of a reliable striking boot can benefit from the cleats’ construction. The quilted vamp construction lends itself to clean strikes, offering a controlled striking zone. The central lacing system, although running low on the boot, still offers a clean area to connect with the ball. The Brasil OG LT+ recognizes that precision doesn’t always require extravagance. It’s a boot that finds its identity in simplicity, offering a reliable and consistent feel for those who rely on their footballing instincts.

Iconic Nostalgia and Craftsmanship

It’s the nostalgia behind the Diadora Brasil OG LT+ that truly draws players in. The heritage of traditional boots finds a home in these cleats, making them a cherished addition for fans of classic designs. Crafted in Italy and featuring premium leather, meticulous stitching, and the legendary fold-over tongue, these cleats exude class. The rarity of fold-over tongues in modern releases enhances their special nature. The strap securely wraps underfoot, ensuring the tongue’s stability and further enhancing the cleats’ authentic appearance.

Timeless Soleplate + Traction

The Brasil OG LT+ features a traditional soleplate, a deliberate choice that prioritizes stability over flashy modern innovations. If you’re a player who appreciates a tried-and-true approach, this soleplate will resonate with you. It’s reminiscent of the type of soleplates found on classic boots like Pantofola d’Oro and Copa Mundial – the kind of design that has stood the test of time for a reason.

Comprising 12 fixed conical studs, this soleplate is all about maintaining traction and grip. Whether you’re playing on firm ground or artificial turf, you’ll find yourself well-grounded and confident in your movements. The multiple studs provide stability, ensuring minimal slip even during rapid changes of direction. It’s the kind of traction that empowers you to focus on your game, knowing that your boots have your back.

With each turn, each sprint, and each touch of the ball, the soleplate of the Brasil OG LT+ responds with reliability. It’s not about flashy patterns or cutting-edge materials; it’s about a soleplate that does exactly what it’s designed to do. The Brasil OG LT+ places control and stability at the forefront, allowing you to express your style of play without hesitation.

In an age where football boots are often adorned with the latest technology, the Brasil OG LT+ stands as a reminder that sometimes simplicity is key. This soleplate isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel; it’s reaffirming the value of a design that has proven its worth over decades of football history.

Affordable Performance

Priced at $120, the Diadora Brasil OG LT+ offers a compelling blend of value, nostalgia, and performance. These cleats encapsulate the essence of the iconic Brasil line while delivering performance benefits suited for the modern game. The Brasil OG LT+ stands as a testament to Diadora’s commitment to accessible quality, allowing players to experience a touch of tradition combined with performance excellence.

Critics Notes

While the Diadora Brasil OG LT+ brings a strong sense of tradition and classic styling to the pitch, there are a few aspects to consider. The focus on comfort and simplicity means that this boot might not appeal to players seeking the latest technological innovations or flashy features. The absence of modern elements like advanced cushioning systems and intricate lacing patterns might leave some players wanting more in terms of personalized fit and comfort.

Retail Details

Additionally, the Brasil OG LT+ falls under a more budget-friendly price point, which is an advantage for those looking for a quality boot without breaking the bank. However, this cost-conscious approach also means that some premium elements found in higher-end boots may be lacking. Players accustomed to a more plush feel or additional performance-enhancing features might need to manage their expectations accordingly.

Skinny Summary

Highlight: The Diadora Brasil OG LT+ seamlessly blends classic football heritage with reliable performance, offering a comfortable and traditional option on the pitch.
Category: Heritage-style comfort boot with a focus on traditional craftsmanship.

Upper – Touch and Control

The FUTURE ULTIMATE’s upper, a testament to Puma’s innovative design, proved to be more than just a visual spectacle. Running my fingers across its textured surface was a tactile journey, revealing the purpose behind each raised dimple and pattern. These elements were meticulously placed to enhance grip in areas that matter most during gameplay. The forefoot’s raised dimples and the inner midfoot patterns provided enhanced traction and precision when controlling the ball, dribbling past opponents, and executing intricate maneuvers.

When it comes to the actual touch on the ball, the FUTURE ULTIMATE truly shines. The textured upper allows for a level of control that elevates your passing, dribbling, and finishing into works of art. The engineered 3D textures strategically placed at key contact zones interact with the ball, creating a sensation of heightened grip and enhanced command. As you receive the ball, you’ll notice an immediate difference – the upper’s grip aids in trapping and cushioning the ball’s impact, allowing for quicker and smoother ball control.

Dribbling past opponents becomes an immersive experience. The combination of the textured upper and the adaptive fit allows for confident touches that translate into precise and responsive movements. The added grip helps maintain control even in tight spaces, giving you an edge when maneuvering through defenses.

When striking the ball, the enhanced grip and control become even more evident. The raised dimples on the forefoot provide a tangible sensation as your foot connects with the ball’s surface. This interaction contributes to a cleaner strike, allowing you to apply the desired spin and trajectory. Whether you’re aiming for pinpoint accuracy or powerful shots, the FUTURE ULTIMATE’s upper gives you the confidence to shape the ball according to your intentions.

Puma FUTURE Ultimate Soleplate and Traction

These studs are strategically positioned to support multidirectional movements, ensuring you can execute quick changes of direction with confidence.

When it comes to artificial turf, the rounded design of the bladed studs helps release the soleplate from the surface, preventing excessive drag and allowing for smoother transitions between steps. This dual-purpose traction system ensures that the FUTURE ULTIMATE remains a versatile choice, whether you’re playing on traditional grass or synthetic turf.

One notable aspect of the soleplate’s performance is its natural flex. From the first wear, the soleplate exhibits an inherent flexibility that mirrors the movement of your foot. This organic responsiveness not only enhances your comfort but also contributes to a more fluid and efficient playstyle. You won’t need to worry about a break-in period to experience the soleplate’s full potential; it’s ready to perform from the get-go.

The FUTURE ULTIMATE’s soleplate and traction system work in tandem to provide the stability, grip, and maneuverability required for players seeking to dominate on the field. Whether you’re executing quick turns, accelerating into open spaces, or engaging in intricate footwork, the soleplate ensures that you remain grounded and in control, enabling you to unleash your full potential.

How do they Fit?

The FUTURE ULTIMATE’s fit, while adhering to the true-to-size heritage of the FUTURE series, carries a distinct sense of evolution. The snug sensation upon wearing the cleats exemplifies Puma’s commitment to innovation. Embracing this design’s unique requirements, I found that opening the laces before wearing the cleats allowed the knit material to stretch and accommodate my foot comfortably.

While the initial fit may feel tight, it’s a testament to the cleats’ intention to merge form and function. The gradual stretch of the upper over time transforms the FUTURE ULTIMATE into a customized extension of your playing style.

Critics Notes

While the Puma FUTURE ULTIMATE undeniably shines in numerous areas, it’s essential to address a few considerations that might sway certain preferences. The bold and vibrant colorway, while visually striking to some, may not resonate with players who have a penchant for more traditional, understated styles. However, it’s worth noting that the FUTURE ULTIMATE is available in a range of color options, catering to varying tastes and allowing players to find their perfect match.

Additionally, the adaptive fit provided by the FUZIONFIT360 dual mesh upper may be a new experience for some players. Those who prefer a snug, locked-in sensation might appreciate this feature, while others who lean towards a looser fit might take some time to adjust. The unique construction of the upper, aimed at delivering a personalized feel, may not be an immediate fit for players accustomed to a different type of sensation. It’s worth considering your personal fit preferences and allowing for a brief adjustment period to fully appreciate the benefits of the adaptive upper.

Puma King ULTIMATE FG

The Puma KING has long been celebrated for its legendary touch and feel, thanks to the supple kangaroo leather upper. However, Puma has taken a bold step forward by introducing the 2023 version of the KING, now featuring their new K-BETTER technology. Departing from kangaroo leather, K-BETTER has been scientifically proven to outperform its predecessor in terms of touch, comfort, and durability. With unwavering confidence in this innovation, Puma has decided to cease the production of kangaroo leather football boots this year.

The new Puma KING Ultimate not only embraces sustainability with at least 20% recycled materials in its upper but also delivers exceptional performance benefits. The redesigned lightweight outsole, external heel counter, KING stability spine, and conical studs offer enhanced control over both your movements and the ball. Coupled with the lightweight removable sockliner featuring NanoGrip technology, the KING Ultimate ensures your foot stays firmly in place, minimizing power loss during quick changes in direction. With the KING’s iconic legacy and cutting-edge upgrades, these boots are ready to elevate your game on the pitch – or are they?

Let’s dive into the details and see how the KING Ultimate performs in our comprehensive review.

Puma King Ultimate

KING Ultimate Puma

Initial Reaction

As I unboxed the Puma KING Ultimate with the all-new K-BETTER technology, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity. While the KING has a storied history with its renowned kangaroo leather, the switch to K-BETTER had me intrigued about its performance on the field. I must admit, my expectations were cautiously optimistic, considering it was the first time this material graced a KING release.

Right away, the boots impressed with their clean and sleek appearance, departing from the traditional KING style we’re accustomed to. In fact, they exuded more of a hybrid feel, reminiscent of Puma’s ULTRA series. The design hinted at the fusion of classic craftsmanship with modern innovations. This fresh approach added to the sense of anticipation as I was eager to test them out and see how they would perform in action. With K-BETTER taking center stage and a distinctly refined look, the Puma KING Ultimate looked ready to challenge perceptions and elevate the playing experience. But as any seasoned player knows, looks alone can’t define a boot’s true performance. Let’s delve deeper into the break-in process and comfort to see how they fared during wear.

Break-in and Comfort

Out of the box, the Puma KING Ultimate presented a modern and sleek appearance, setting it apart from the traditional KING K-leather releases. The new K-BETTER upper offered a touch and feel that were surprisingly comparable to leather. However, one noticeable difference was the absence of visible stitching across the vamp or forefoot, giving the boot a more seamless and contemporary look. While the switch in material may lack the nostalgic charm of a classic KING, it brings the silo into a more modern and performance-oriented era.

In terms of fit, I found the boots to be on the snug side, even more so than previous KING models. The K-BETTER material doesn’t stretch as well as leather, which posed some challenges during the initial wears. Unfortunately, this led to a blister on my left heel, an issue I hadn’t experienced in a while. However, the general comfort of the boots was still impressive, with the upper material flexing naturally with my movements. The padded tongue and collar further added to the overall comfort and support.

Breaking in the Puma KING Ultimate required some patience, as the upper material needed time to stretch and conform to my foot shape. Over time, the boots became more accommodating, but I realized in hindsight that opting for a half-size up might have been a wise choice to avoid initial discomfort.

In summary, while the Puma KING Ultimate delivers modern comfort and performance, the switch in upper material and sizing may present some challenges for players used to the traditional KING feel. It’s essential to consider the sizing carefully and allow for a proper break-in period to fully appreciate the boots’ comfort and potential on the pitch. Despite these minor hiccups, the KING Ultimate holds significant promise and introduces players to a new era of Puma’s legendary silo. Let’s move on to the next section to evaluate how the KING Ultimate performs in action.

Puma King Ultimate K-Better

K-Better New Puma King Upper Material

Puma King Ultimate Detailing

In-Game Performance

On the pitch, the Puma KING Ultimate truly lived up to its iconic name. Once the boots were properly broken in and adjusted (I wish I could say right size here – but they were broken in to the level at which I could wear them) their performance capabilities came to the forefront. As a player who values touch, control, and precise movements, I found the King ULTIMATE to be quite impressive, even with the switch from kangaroo leather to K-BETTER.

The touch on the ball was smooth and responsive, allowing for excellent ball control and accurate passes. While the absence of traditional stitching on the upper might take some getting used to, it didn’t hinder the boots’ overall performance. The clean striking surface offered a consistent touch on the ball, enabling precise dribbling and passing, which are essential aspects of my playing style. Additionally, the boots’ fit did improved after the break-in period, providing a more secure and stable feel during quick changes of direction. The external heel counter and KING stability spine on the outsole added to the boots’ responsiveness and support, enhancing my confidence during dynamic movements.

Another noteworthy feature that doesn’t seem to be mentioned elsewhere is a subtle design detail that caught my attention. Around the forefoot vamp of the upper, Puma has incorporated light hexagonal shapes, forming what seems like a six-sided pattern. While I’m not entirely sure of the scientific reasoning behind this specific design choice, it does add an intriguing layer of texture and dimension to the boots’ touch zones on the ball.

These hexagonal shapes allow the upper to fold more naturally, contributing to enhanced ball control and touch sensitivity. It’s fascinating to see how Puma aims to optimize the cleats’ performance by incorporating such fine details into their design. While the exact technical benefits of these hexagonal shapes may not be explicitly explained, their presence showcases Puma’s commitment to innovation and attention to detail. For players who value precise ball manipulation and seek a unique touch sensation during gameplay, this design element could be an exciting addition.

It is a simple piece, but one aspect that stood out was the built-in tongue design. The ultra-thin, one-piece tongue contributed to the sleek and modern appearance of the boots. It sits comfortably across the front of the ankle, offering a smooth and seamless connection with the rest of the boot. Because it is made of a knit material, it also offers natural stretch around the midfoot.

Another area that stood out to me, and I’ll talk about more below, was the excellent traction provided by the conical studs on various surfaces. Whether playing on natural grass or artificial turf, the KING Ultimate delivered reliable grip and stability. The boots felt planted, enabling explosive sprints and quick cuts without any slipping or loss of traction.

Puma King ULTIMATE Soleplate

Soleplate and Traction

The soleplate of the Puma KING Ultimate plays a vital role in delivering the boot’s exceptional performance. Puma has engineered a new lightweight outsole that complements the boot’s upper, ensuring a harmonious balance between agility and stability. The conical studs, strategically positioned on the soleplate, provide reliable traction and prevent unwanted slippage during high-intensity movements. If you know me, you will know how fond I am of a low profile conical stud, especially on turf where they ensure less drag through the surface. I found that the soleplate’s design allowed for smooth transitions and quick changes of direction, crucial for evading opponents and maintaining control of the game. The KING stability spine further enhanced the boot’s responsiveness, allowing for explosive bursts of speed without compromising on balance.

During testing on both firm ground and artificial turf, the Puma KING Ultimate demonstrated consistent and reliable grip, which significantly boosted my confidence on the field. Whether performing quick turns, executing sharp cuts, or engaging in aggressive maneuvers, the soleplate consistently delivered optimal traction.

Puma King Ultimate how do they fit

How do they fit?

The fit of the Puma KING Ultimate is one area where I encountered mixed feelings. As mentioned earlier, the boot fits snugly out of the box, especially around the midfoot and forefoot areas. This secure fit is intended to provide optimal lockdown and prevent any unnecessary movement inside the boot during play. While the snug fit was appreciated for its responsiveness and connection to the ball, it did pose some challenges during the break-in period. The K-BETTER upper material, though offering a soft and flexible feel, didn’t stretch as much as traditional leather, leading to some discomfort in the initial wears. It took me a few sessions to break them in fully and achieve a more comfortable fit.

In terms of sizing, I recommend going up half a size if you prefer a slightly looser fit or if you have a wider foot. While I typically wear my regular size in most boots, I found that going up half a size would have provided a more comfortable fit, especially during the break-in phase.

Once properly broken in and adjusted to the sizing, the Puma KING Ultimate offered a secure and stable feel on the foot. However, it’s essential to consider individual fit preferences and possibly try them on before making a purchase decision.

Critics Notes

While the Puma KING Ultimate impressed with its advanced technology and modern design, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. The shift from traditional kangaroo leather to the new K-BETTER material might not sit well with players who cherish the classic feel and touch associated with the KING line. While K-BETTER performed admirably in terms of touch, comfort, and durability, some players may miss the nostalgic experience of wearing a classic leather boot.

Additionally, the snug fit and lack of stretch in the K-BETTER upper could pose challenges during the initial break-in period. Players with wider feet or those who prefer a more relaxed fit may find it necessary to size up to ensure optimal comfort.

Despite these considerations, the Puma KING Ultimate remains a top-tier option for players seeking a sleek, modern design, and advanced performance on the field. The use of sustainable materials, such as the K-BETTER upper with recycled content, showcases Puma’s commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in football footwear.

Highlight: The Puma KING Ultimate features Puma’s innovative K-BETTER technology, offering clean performance without using kangaroo leather.
Category: A former heritage style release turned in to modern, speed-oriented cleat designed for players seeking cutting-edge technology.
Would I Buy Them: I don’t get the same nostalgic feel from these Kings, so I think I’d pass. For players looking to embrace the future of the silo and experience a different type of performance, the Puma KING Ultimate FG/AG is a worthwhile investment.

Mizuno Alpha Japan Review

As a fan of Mizuno boot releases, I’ve always been impressed by the quality the Japanese brand bring to the table. The Mizuno Alpha Japan FG is no exception, and it offers another unique addition to their lineup. What caught my attention about these was their incredibly lightweight design, making them one of the lightest soccer cleats ever produced by Mizuno. To go along with that innovation is a higher price tag, which might raise some concerns for players who are on a budget and need to make sure they are getting value for their investment.

Having had the opportunity to test and wear the Mizuno Alpha Japan for the past few weeks, I can confidently say that they possess several outstanding qualities that make them worth considering. To help figure out if you should add them to your wish-list, we will delve into the various aspects of their performance, sharing my personal experiences and insights with hem. While they do have a lot to offer, it’s important to determine whether they align with your specific needs and preferences.

Mizuno Alpha Japan FG Soccer Cleats

Initial Reaction

Like any Mizuno release, unboxing the Alpha Japan FG was a moment filled with anticipation and excitement. They carry a certain level of prestige and expectation. However, considering the higher price point of these cleats, I couldn’t help but wonder how they would stack up against their competitors in terms of performance.

One thing that immediately caught my attention was the visually stunning design. To date, Mizuno has delivered on several eye-catching colorways, and this pair is no exception. The intricate details and craftsmanship showcases the brands continued dedication to creating boots that are not only high-performing but also visually appealing.

Breaking In and Comfort

The Mizuno Alpha Japan FG offers a comfortable fit once they are properly broken in. Initially, I found that they were slightly snug around the ankle, especially when wearing grip socks. However, this is not a major issue and can be easily remedied by fully opening up the laces and carefully wiggling your foot in. Don’t be stressed if they feel a little snug putting them on for the first time. Once on, they provide a secure and supportive fit that keeps your foot locked in place.

In terms of overall comfort, the Mizuno Alpha Japan is a lightweight option that offers a decent level of comfort.

However, it’s important to note that they may not provide the same level of comfort as traditional leather upper releases. The upper materials are pliable and allow for some natural stretch, but they do not offer the same softness and immediate comfort that leather provides.

Moving to the soleplate, it offers a good level of flexibility right out of the box. There is a noticeable spring-like sensation under the toe joint area, which enhances the overall responsiveness and allows for a sense of natural movement while wearing the cleats. This feature contributes to the overall comfort and performance capabilities of the Mizuno Alpha Japan FG.

Mizuno Alpha Japan Upper Design

Mizuno Alpha Japan Advanced Design

Mizuno Alpha Japan Designed For Speed

Advanced Design and Construction

Mizuno know how to take things to another level, showcasing a range of advanced design features and construction techniques that contribute to its exceptional performance on the field. They have incorporated several innovative elements into these cleats, setting them apart from other speed-oriented options in the market.

One notable aspect is the engineered fit last, which combines multiple materials and technologies to provide a precise and secure fit. The Engineered Fit Woven upper material offers moderate lateral stretch, allowing for a customized fit that adapts to the foot’s shape. Additionally, the Engineered Fit Flame pattern minimizes lateral shifting during play, enhancing stability and reducing the risk of discomfort.

Another key design element is the ALPHA Triangle Studs on the outsole. These triangular studs are strategically positioned to optimize grip and enable quick vertical speed and precise movements on the pitch. Their unique shape and arrangement enhance traction, providing the confidence needed to make explosive sprints and agile cuts.

Another cool feature incorporated is the MIZUNO ENERZY foam in the midsole. This innovative material offers enhanced responsiveness and energy return, maximizing the player’s efficiency and providing an added boost during high-intensity actions. It strikes a balance between softness and resilience, delivering both comfort and performance benefits. The attention to detail extends to the upper’s construction as well. The cage-style design provides structural support without compromising weight, offering a delicate balance between durability and flexibility. The addition of the suede liner within the cage not only enhances the boot’s aesthetic appeal but also provides additional texture and control when in contact with the ball.

These advanced design elements and construction techniques demonstrate Mizuno’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of soccer cleat technology. The Mizuno Alpha Japan FG offers a combination of lightweight performance, precise fit, and innovative features that cater to the demands of speed-oriented players.

In Game performance

When it comes to performance, the Mizuno Alpha Japan truly shines as a speed-oriented boot. The lightweight design and minimalistic feel make them a great choice for players who value agility and quick acceleration on the field. While the thin upper material may not offer the same level of power and shooting capabilities as traditional power boots, it enhances the overall lightweight feel of the cleats.

During my testing, I found that they allowed for quick and explosive movements, thanks to their dynamic design. As a striker, I appreciated the lightweight nature of these cleats, as they made me feel a little quicker on my feet. The lightweight design also contributed to better overall movement and maneuverability.

It’s important to note that they are not specifically designed for shooting prowess. The thin upper material prioritizes speed and responsiveness over added cushioning and padding for shooting. However, the cleats still provide a decent level of control on the ball, thanks to their minimalistic design and the unique texturing across the vamp. Players who rely more on agility, speed, and precision in their game will find these cleats to be a solid option.

While they may not have the same power-oriented feel as some other boots on the market, they make up for it with their lightweight construction and dynamic performance capabilities. They offer a unique combination of speed, agility, and control, making them an excellent choice for players who prioritize those aspects of their game.

Mizuno Alpha Japan FG Review Performance

Mizuno Alpha Japan Soleplate

Soleplate and Traction

Underfoot, the Alpha Japan features a well-engineered soleplate that contributes to its overall performance on the field. The triangular-stud base offers responsive and multidirectional traction, allowing for quick and precise movements in any direction. The studs have been carefully designed to provide optimal grip and enable vertical speed and fine movements.

During my testing, I found that the soleplate delivered excellent traction on various surfaces. Whether playing on firm ground or artificial grass, the studs offered a secure grip without unnecessary bite, allowing for quick release and acceleration. The design of the studs, with their lower profile, amplifies the boot’s rotational capabilities and ensures solid traction during quick changes of direction.

Right out of the box, the soleplate has a good flex, providing a sense of natural movement underfoot. There is a noticeable spring under the toe joint area, which adds to the overall responsiveness and agility of the boots. This flexibility contributes to a smoother transition during movements, allowing for quick and effortless changes in direction.

Overall, the triangular-stud configuration, combined with the boot’s flexibility, ensures solid traction, quick release, and efficient changes of direction. Players who value agility and responsiveness will appreciate the performance of the soleplate on these cleats.

Mizuno Alpha Japan On Foot In Testing

How do they Fit?

Compared to the current market, these have somewhat of a unique fit that combines elements of a snug, secure feel with moderate stretch and movement. The traditional tongue and lacing system allow players to customize the fit and mimic the shape of their foot. While they are not specifically designed for wide feet, the upper material has enough pliability to accommodate a medium to wide foot shape comfortably. When putting on the boots, they may feel slightly snug around the ankle, especially if you wear grip socks. However, this snugness is not uncomfortable; it simply requires fully opening up the lacing and wiggling your way into the boots. Once on, the material through the heel keeps your foot locked in place, providing a secure and stable feel.

It’s important to note that the Mizuno Alpha Japan FG is a lightweight release, and as such, the focus is on delivering a streamlined and minimalistic design rather than excessive padding or cushioning. While they may not provide the same level of plush comfort as boots with a more traditional leather upper, they offer a comfortable fit within the context of their lightweight construction.

One aspect worth mentioning is the design of the tongue, which is rather unique. It features an ultra-thin transparent synthetic material that adds to the sleek and modern aesthetic of the boots. The tongue sits perfectly across the front of the ankle, adding to the overall fit and providing a smooth connection with the rest of the boot.

In terms of sizing, the Mizuno Alpha Japan FG is true to size, so it is recommended to stick with your usual size when ordering. However, as with any boot, individual fit preferences may vary, so it’s always best to try them on if possible or refer to Mizuno’s sizing guidelines for further assistance.

Mizuno Alpha Japan Inside

Critics Notes

While the Mizuno Alpha Japan FG has many positive attributes, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. One aspect to be aware of is the price point. Priced at $319.99, these boots fall into the high-end category, making them a significant investment for players. It’s important to weigh the performance and features against the price and consider whether they align with your specific needs and budget.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that they are primarily designed as a speed boot, which may not appeal to players who prioritize power and shooting. The thin upper material, while contributing to a lightweight feel, may not provide the same level of cushioning or ball-striking capabilities as boots with a more substantial upper.

Retail Details

The Mizuno Alpha Japan FG is available in the White/Ignition colorway and can be found on Soccer.com. With a price point of $319.99, these boots are positioned in the higher end of the market. It’s important to consider your budget and personal preferences before making a purchase decision. Keep in mind that Mizuno is known for its commitment to quality, and the Alpha Japan FG is no exception.

When selecting your size, it’s recommended to stick with your true size for a comfortable fit. Nike Zoom Mercurial Vapor 15

Designed for speed and agility, the Nike Zoom Mercurial Vapor 15 is one of those boots I was ultra excited about getting to test out. They feature a lightweight design with a streamlined, low-cut profile that allows for quick movements on the field.

When it comes to the Superfly vs Vapor 15 comparison, there is only one significant difference, and that is in the dynamic mid-cut collar. If you are a fan of a higher ankle cut with lockdown, then the Superfly is absolutely the way to go. But if you prefer a more tradition cut around the ankle that offers a little more freedom, then it is the Vapor you want. Outside of that, performance on foot is very similar, at the same high level that makes them one of the best options currently on the market!

Also, if you are wondering what the Q stands for, it is Qatar. This particular colorway was released as part of Nike’s World Cup pack , with the color listed as Metallic Copper. You can find them HERE.

Nike Vapor 15 Vaporsite Upper

Vaporposite+ Upper Material

We were first introduced to Vaporsite on the last generation of Mercurial. On our Vapor 14 Elite review, I noted that the material was on the rigid side, having an almost plastic like feel. On foot, they played far more pliable than imagined, offering a natural touch on the ball. This version offers a dramatic upgrade. Nike has just added a + to the name, but performance wise they are on an entirely new level!

Gone is that rigid feel and in its place comes a very responsive upper material. It still has a grippy, grid mesh design with a premium material for optimal ball control at high speeds. Nike has managed to successfully reduce the thickness of the material without impacting durability. Let’s hope we see this material used on future releases, as it is a HUGE win performance wise!

Touch, Control, Shooting

In terms of performance on the ball, the entire design creates a very natural feel and clean touch. If there is an upper where you can see and experience the impact of their research and development, this would be it. The added grip created by the grid mesh allows for a clean touch, with the thinness of the material ensuring you get full feel on the ball. They don’t fall into the power category, but they do fall into the “I want to get on the ball, dribble at speed and score some goals” category. Pretty sure there will be a large subset of players that are looking for a boot like that!

Nike Vapor 15 Upper Performance

Nike Air Zoom Mercurial Vapor 14 Ankle Cut

3/4 Zoom Airbag

On release, this is the addition that piqued most interest, with fans wondering just how Nike could integrate an airbag into a soccer shoe! It seems pretty wild and audacious to think it could positively enhance performance in a sport that relies on quick shifts and dramatic changes in direction.

For the first time in our history, Nike has developed an all-new, soccer-specific 3/4 Zoom Air unit. It sits in the plate and provides an additional level of springy underfoot feel that helps you move faster on the field and create separation when it matters the most—whether you’re scoring goals, being first to the ball or going by defenders.

One might expect an airbag to be super thick and make the footed 4 inches thick. Well, thankfully that is not the case! If you take the insole out, you will find the airbags that sit from the does back through the midfoot. It does sit off the surface of the footed, raised ever so slightly to add that extra layer of spring. To the touch, it feels squishy in the same way as memory foam does. There are groves in specific areas where the insole bends, ensuring it still offers a lot of natural flexibility.

In play, you can absolutely feel the difference and its impact on performance. There are not many times when you can actually tell the difference in soleplate technology. It is usually “if it doesn’t impact performance, it must be good.” But in this case, Nike has added high tech specs that positively impacts how you play in game. I would 100% agree with the statement that it creates an even greater sense of snappy, propulsive energy return.

Nike Zoom Air Mercurial Vapor Soleplate

Nike Zoom Air Mercurial Vapor Soleplate Up Close

Soleplate and Traction

Another important update is the introduction of a Tri-star stud design that provide multidirectional traction with every step, so you can change directions quickly and confidently. It is about as aggressive as you can get on a soleplate, creating a bite as you hit and push off the surface. I wore them on both FG and TF with success. In saying that, they are probably not going to work for players who prefer a more conservative configuration. In other words, if you like a simple, conical stud design you are going to want to completely avoid these.

Nike also use a contoured heel stud profile that provides traction and stability when braking. And there is a duo of toe-off center studs that give you traction during explosive starts.

Nike Zoom Air Mercurial Vapor On Foot

How do they Fit?

Very, very well is the answer to this one! This is the most natural and accommodating Mercurial we have ever had! More players than ever will be able to wear them without the stress of being too narrow or snug. You do get a snug feel from first wear, but as per above it subsides thanks to the pliable materials used.

I’d recommend them as a true to size option in terms of width, with a forefoot width that will accommodate a far wider variety of players that ever before. If you have a medium/wide foot, they will work on nicely. If you have a wide foot and have never been able to wear the Vapor or Superfly before, give yourself the opportunity to try a pair on. These might just work!

Summary

Performance wise, these are a boot that top my current list of favorites. Nike worked on creating a total package with these, ensuring the upper and soleplate offer attacking players the type of on-field advantage they dream of. I genuinely love wearing them, and the feedback I’ve got from friends wearing them has been just as positive. The best Mercurial released to date? I’d argue strongly that YES, they are!

adidas X Speedportal+ Released

Dressed in an electrifying Rick and Morty “Portal Fluid Green” colorway, adidas dropped the X Speedportal in stunning fashion last Summer. It was a high profile release that emphasized the fact they are designed to be one of the fastest silos ever. Big words and high expectations to live up to….which seems appropriate considering their introductory connection to the fast-paced, animated tv show.

Building on the popularity of the Speedflow series, adidas made some key upgrades that were needed. We are talking about elements specifically related to break-in time and overall comfort. When it comes to a challenge, adidas don’t shy away. Instead, they take pride in tackling key performance areas that need improving, while looking for ways to enhance the design.

I must admit, this review is long overdue and had actually been in draft for several weeks. But, that has actually given me extra time to wear them and provide even more detail for those that are on the fence, wondering if they should invest in a pair. An added bonus is that fact that pairs are now on sale, adding to the overall value should you invest in a pair!

Initial Reaction

Initial reaction out of the box is a sharp WOW. There are several important updates on this silo that you can only get a proper feel for by seeing them in hand. For example, the added texture right across the forefoot and down through the instep. There is a lot more going on than I expected. And there is also the raised ridge the runs through the strikzone, it adds a completely unexpected element.

Breaking In and Comfort

For anyone that has worn laceless cleats before, you’ll know that there is a natural break-in period that you need to go through. The fact that there are no laces means that you have to allow the shape to naturally stretch and mold to your foot as you wear them. The same is true with these, but the time it takes to adjust is far less. Meaning you can get them into a game much quicker with the potential of comfort issues dramatically reduced. I wore them in an initial practice session, where they felt a little tight across the midfoot. But that quickly subsided and I to break them into a game for their next wear. It worked out incredibly well!

Things that help with comfort. First, adidas use a very responsive Primeknit material through the upper. It keeps you locked in but also offers plenty of mobility inside the boots, allowing you to toes to move more naturally inside. Looking at the ankle cut, it is very defined across the ankle, contouring just underneath your ankle socket. Coupled with an extraordinary layer of heel padding, your foot stays in place without an overly restricted feel. In other words, you are locked down but the stretch and movement in the materials removes the fear of being trapped. It completely envelopes your heel inside the boot, adding support through play.

Do They Overstretch?

What a common question this is with a laceless release. And the answer to this one is pretty simple.

I’m at the point now where these have become a favorite coaching shoe, just because of the ease of putting them on. I’ve had them several months and love the fact that they slip on and off so easily, where I can show up to practice and slip into them in seconds. No tying laces or time checking if they are tight enough. And they stay on with no issues, I continue to wear them as a game boot in the leagues where I play. So, no they won’t overstretch!

Just to note in this area, since it ties in pretty well, the overall durability of the boots has been highly impressive. I’ve probably worn them 20-30 times and they are still in really good condition, minus some scuffing from playing on turf. The upper to sole joining is fully locked in place with no seperation. In reality, if I was to give them a proper wash, they would probably look close to new again!

Laceless Design

One of the most common questions I’ll get from adidas fans is whether to go laces or laceless in their silos. I’ll personally go laces all the time, I just prefer having the ability to dictate my own fit and tighten/loosen them up as needed. But there are plenty of players who will find the laceless line to be a better option. Compared to all other options on the market, these are the best laceless cleats available thanks to the enhanced design that balances snug feel with relaxed support throughout the upper.

If you look at the material, adidas has actually created two zones of knit that work in unison to create a balanced feel across your foot’s upper. On the outer side and around the ankle, the knit is much tighter. It stretches, but has a more structured feel. Towards the inner area, top of where the lacing would be, it is far more elastic, and this is the area that really stretches across your foot. If you put your finger just inside and press against the material, it almost shapes perfectly along.

adidas X Speedportal Heel Design

addias X Speedportal Primeknit Upper and Laceless

Primeknit Upper on the X Speedportal+

Upper Material – Touch and Control

Primeknit is the primary material used in the Speedskin upper, and across its surface is a super-thin tactile top layer. Honestly, I was surprised by the amount of definition and texture there is across the upper, especially in key contact areas. Because that top layer is sort of melted on, it dips through the individual layers of Raiment, creating indentations and creases that add to the amount of controlled surface area available. On the ball is plays out extremely well, giving you a little extra grip as you come in contact. It is not overall obtrusive, and the Primeknit upper material is soft, so you get a nicely balanced level of natural feel while also experiencing added sensation as the surface of your foot meets the ball.

Where the Predator Accuracy is designed for shooting and striking long passes, the Speedportal is geared toward players who value close control and a feel as you dribble or move the ball through tight spaces.

One other note with touch and control. There are also mini raised ridges through the midfoot, or instep area, that provide a little extra cushion to control fast passes. Think of it as a toned down CTR360 control zone.

Are they going to turn you into prime Messi? Yes and No. Not many of us are near the levels of the GOAT. But given the overall performance and natural feel on the ball, you have the potential to turn into a mini Messi on any occasion. A confident, wannabe Messi that is ready to turn it up during the given game situation you are playing in.

adidas X Speedportal Soleplate Traction

adidas X Speedportal soleplate

Underfoot – Traction and Stability

One of the most important updates is the inclusion of a Carbon Fiber Speedframe. adidas has changed to an ultra lightweight construction with revolutionary carbon fiber insert in the forefoot. This is intended to allow for more efficient power transmission when accelerating and sprinting, providing a truer level of performance. You also get a new stud configuration that is optimized for pure acceleration. The outsole and stud configuration are designed for use on firm ground.

I’ve had the opportunity to wear these on the both FG and AG with no problems. The configuration feels very well balanced, with no drag across the surface. You can cut, chop and turn without any unnecessary distractions.

adidas has also added stability wings around the ankle, with the intent to provide added stability through the area by contouring your ankle. It essentially allows you to lock into the heel area without any movement in the material. Again, the internal heel padding with the support wings work together to minimize movement and maximize comfort around the heel area.

How do they Fit?

When it comes to laceless, you really have to ensure they are the correct size for you. Personally, I found them to be a very competent medium-wide fit option. And I’ve got confidence that they would fit certain players with a wider foot. I’m not going to say ALL wide fitting players, because I know there are some of you that can’t find wide enough fitting cleats. But, for those who normally don’t wear laceless because they are slightly too tight, you will need to check these out! The forefoot provides a nice wide base for the sole of your foot to rest on, while the upper does provide a natural stretch over time, that will adjust to your foot shape.

adidas X Speedportal+ Speed Boot

Critics Notes

I’m blanking in this area!

I’ve been more than pleasantly surprised with the X Speedportal since I started wearing them. They are not only the best X release we have seen in recent years, but they are more importantly the best laceless boot ever released. And I say that with confidence. Everything they have on offer makes them the best lace free boot we’ve had the opportunity to wear. adidas has done a terrific job balancing the overall focus and performance, evolving the upper to be more responsive in comparison to prior generations.

Retail Details

There are plenty of options currently available in the series, including the World Cup colorway and the latest stealth white colorway. Hitting the market, you will need a cool $280 to own a pair. But, for those on a budget, there are also several versions on sale that drop below the $200 mark and are well worth checking out!

Nike Air Zoom Mercurial Superfly

Built for the modern soccer player, the Nike Air Zoom Mercurial features several key elements that make them extremely unique and different to the market. This includes a tech advanced articulated, three-quarter length Zoom airbag that sits directly inside of the plate of the boot. And they have also upgraded the upper material, using a next generation Vaporposite+, which combines a grippy, grid mesh with a premium material for optimal ball control at high speeds.

Let the hype train begin right here. This is not like any other review I have done on a Mercurial release before. My experience with these has been incredibly positive from start to finish, with each new element and intricate piece of detailing adding its own level of value. What inclusion has the biggest impact? And could they be a new favorite boot? Details below.

Initial Reaction

Nike has gone all out on the design, implementing several new key innovative elements that create a completely different level of performance. But, does that make them easier or more difficult to wear? Are they going to be overly complicated when it comes to performance? There is going to be a lot to breakdown about them. Design wise, they look incredible with signature call outs that create a sense of excitement.

Zoom Air Mercurial Superfly Unboxing

Nike Air Zoom Superfly Review

Breaking In/Comfort

I’ve always faced challenges when wearing Mercurial boots for the first time, the silo is built to be tight fitting and snappy. Every pair has needed a few wears before they felt truly ready for games. To my complete surprise, these are different – cue a level of sheer shock that I hadn’t experienced with the Mercurial before! I was able to take them out of the box and wear them comfortably first time out. When your experience with any boot is positive first time out, it really sets the tone. And that was exactly the case here. But I was left with a lot of questions; How can the mercurial be comfy from first wear? What makes them so different? What has Nike changed to enhance the fit and feel on foot?

Inside, Nike use a new speed cage that plays a big role in the fit. It is intended to create optimal lockdown, but unlike other speed cages, it is pliable and has natural movement with your foot. It is thin but made of a strong material, securing your foot between the upper and outsole without adding additional weight. And the upper itself is called Vaporposite+, something we will talk more about below. But the key takeaway here is that it is extremely pliable, allowing the upper to contour very easily around your foot shape. Both are huge upgrades on a silo that has been somewhat rigid in the past. Immediate upgrades that make them extremely comfortable to wear right out of the box.

Inside the boot, around the ankle, Nike has added a padded layer that keeps your heel comfortably locked in place. It also features a perforated design, which I’m assuming offers a little extra breathability during wear. Another simple, but solid addition to the boot.

Nike Air Zoom Mercurial Superfly Vaporsite+ Upper

Superfly 9 On Foot

Touch, Control, Shooting

In terms of performance on the ball, the entire design creates a very natural feel and clean touch. If there is an upper where you can see and experience the impact of their research and development, this would be it. The added grip created by the grid mesh allows for a clean touch, with the thinness of the material ensuring you get full feel on the ball. Pretty sure there will be a large subset of players that are looking for a boot like that!

I would 100% agree with the statement that it creates an even greater sense of snappy, propulsive energy return.

Mid Cut Collar

Being that this is a Superfly, you won’t be surprised to hear that Nike has included a dynamic mid-cut collar design around the ankle. like previous editions, it fits comfortably around the ankle, creating a locked in fit. First few wears, it is a little challenging to get in and out of them. But once you have figured out a strategy that works, it only takes a few seconds to slip into them! If you have worn Superfly before, expect the same level of fit and feel.

These might just work!

Critics Notes

I’m skipping this part, there isn’t anything worth adding here – they are too good to criticize!

Retail Details

There are already several colorways released and available, retail of $274.99. It might be a while before we see them drop in price, so you have to factor in if the elite level price offers value right now. And for once I would say they are worth it! Why?

Well, here we are at the end of the review, the review of a next generation Mercurial release. And, I’m floored by that fact that they are officially one of my favorite boots of all time! For those that know my feelings on the Mercurial silo, you will be well aware of how critical I’ve been in the past. But, this time around, Nike has nailed it and created a pure winner. I’ll be wearing this pair as much as I can in the near future, they are a joy on foot!
