Earlier today, Puma unveiled 10 progressive new kit designs for 10 of their top European clubs, and the initial wave of responses has been pretty critical. Many have posed question like are they a social experiment, is Puma actually going to let pro players wear them in games, or were they designed by interns? Why the controversy behind the design?

Well, I think it is strongly related to how Puma has used the club name across the chest of each team, moving the actual club crest to the back of the jersey, under the collar.

“The new Third kits create fearless new expressions of each club’s identity and challenge tradition by reimagining conventional football kits in a brand-new approach that merges football and streetwear culture.

On each jersey the club’s badge has been repositioned and placed on the back of the jersey beneath the collar. Select jerseys complement this with an innovative use of the club’s crest as a tonal repeat graphic embossed into the fabric of the jerseys. The most eye-catching feature of the jerseys is the placement at the heart, of the club’s name emblazed across the front of the jersey in each clubs’ bespoke font, with the PUMA cat centrally positioned to add balance to the visionary design.”

In terms of materials and performance, the new Third jerseys combine 100% recycled polyester with advanced PUMA dryCELL thermoregulation technology to ensure uncompromising fit and mobility, keeping athletes dry and comfortable. The jersey integrates an ultra-light jacquard structure into the back of the jersey to enhance breathability during intense performance. PUMA has also utilized an innovative Dope Dye manufacturing process to drastically reduce the amount of water and dye used during production, to further their goals of creating more sustainable products.

AC Milan, Manchester City, Valencia C.F, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Olympique de Marseille, Stade Rennais F.C., Shakhtar Donetsk, Fenerbahçe, Krasnodar and PSV Eindhoven’s are the clubs that will be wearing the new jerseys during their 2021/22 cup competitions.

The Brazilian National Team are set to debut a brand new 2019-20 kit, in celebration of their victory at the Copa America 100th years ago. We think this one is absolutely stunning, with the Brasil team set to kick off the the latest edition of the historic tournament kicks wearing the anniversary kit.

The design is clean, sharp and embodies what you expect from a Brazilian kit. White pays tribute to the historic 1919 trophy, while a classic polo neck, player numbers and details on the sleeves all feature an iconic shade of blue.

In 1919, Brasil hosted the first edition of Copa America. Wearing a white kit, the team made history that year by winning the tournament at home and starting a journey of victories that transformed Brazilian football into a national icon.

We have been treated to some incredible designs over the past few months, as brands look to create a connection between fans and the club they represent. It is always nice to have the latest jersey, but when there is history or some type of significance behind the design, it makes it just a little more special.

FC Barcelona

Just as the Avinguda Diagonal cuts an angular swathe through Barcelona’s city blocks, a sash darts from the left shoulder to right hem of FC Barcelona’s vibrant 2018-19 third kit, which completes a set of new kits rich in club DNA. The two-tone shirt, with the darker red of the sash and its surrounding graphic gradually giving way to a paler pink shade, is the latest in a long line of daring changed kits worn by Barca.

The new third kit for FC Internazionale Milano features a distorted map of Milan’s city center within a swirling marbled graphic. The pattern surrounds a thick, dark gray cross, which is a reference to the Cross of St. George, a powerful Milanese symbol found on the city’s coat of arms. For a final flourish, the famous blue of Inter’s home shirt makes an appearance in the form of a blue Swoosh and club crest.

AS Roma

A series of aerial map views of key moments in Roman history form a distinctive pattern for the fiery gold jersey. Discreetly embedded within the design is the Lupetto, the she-wolf described in the founding myth of Rome, a powerful club symbol for the Giallorossi. Both the distorted map and the icon celebrate the city’s formidable history and potent future.

Atlético Madrid

The Fountain of Neptune provided the creative spark for the color palette of Atlético de Madrid’s 2018-19 third kit. The striking two-tone blue shirt pays a twofold tribute to the synergy among the club, its supporters and the Spanish capital: First, by representing the water that flows from the fountain, around which fans gather to celebrate victories. And second, through its orange detailing, reminiscent of the way the city’s sunshine bounces off Neptune’s trident.

Chelsea

Inspired by the heart of London, the DNA of Chelsea is threaded throughout their new third jersey. The dynamic textural print on the shirt’s center appears at first glance to be a contemporary pattern, but upon closer inspection transforms into an aerial depiction of Stamford Bridge and its surrounding area. The Blues’ historic home is honored within the print, creating a link to London even when the team is playing away. Matched with teal blue shorts and crimson socks, the new third kit will be worn during the club’s European campaign this season.

Nike’s third jersey design is influenced by modern and unexpected color palettes found in urban environments and the natural world. The shirt’s print has a modern, asymmetrical pattern of dark colors and hard geometric lines. Upon closer inspection, the pattern reveals an aerial depiction of the North London club’s location in the Borough of Haringey (N17). The green hue on the body, shorts and socks of the kit is inspired by the original logo of a brewery that owned a portion of the land where the Spurs’ new stadium is built. Tottenham will also wear the third kit in European competition.

We are only a few weeks away from the start of the 2018 World Cup. Oh, yes!!!! With no USMNT to support (and in my case Ireland) there are probably a few of you out there trying to find a tcountry to follow during the tournament. It makes things just that little bit more interesting when you are invested in a team, after all. And that might include picking up a kit to wear come game days.

That is why we decided to put together a breakdown for each brand, giving you some idea of what to expect if you are looking to find a new kit. For each brand, we picked up a size medium replica jersey (not the official game jersey) and here is some details on how they fit.

*note: we are still waiting for some brands to release their World Cup kits and for them to become available in the US. As they do, we will update the post.

Its comfortable, with a little bit of extra space through the chest. adidas use a layer of stitching around the outer side of the shoulder that creates a structured fit. It basically creates an angled fit that runs down the contour between your shoulder and arm. To the touch, the material is very soft, which adds to the comfort of the wear.

Nike

Fit + Feel: Nike create their jerseys to be form-fitting, which means they are slightly snug across the chest. But in terms of how the kit feels on, it is very natural. It is the one kit that seems to provide the most confident fit. I’m a fan of the sleeves, as they come down just the right length and have a pretty ideal tightness around the upper shoulder. One thing to note about this jersey is that it has a different feel to the other kits. It is almost like a layer of water on top of the jersey, where it has a slightly tackiness about it. But not in a negative way. It is just different, obviously related to the tech used in the material.

Puma

Countries: Senegal, Switzerland, Uruguay

Key Feature: dryCELL moisture management. Highly functional materials draw sweat away from your skin and help keep you dry and comfortable during exercise.

Jersey Worn: Uruguay

Fit + Feel: Normally, Puma are the brand with the tightest fitting jerseys. But that isn’t the case here. Instead, the fit is very relaxed right through the chest and stomach area. The arms are cut a little longer than the other kits, with added space that makes it an ideal kit for players with large biceps! The neck is also cut pretty wide, so it sits a little lower on the neck than the other brands.

New Balance

Countries: Costa Rica, Panama.
Key Feature: NB Dry moisture wicking fabric. Releases moisture away from the body, fast drying.

Jersey Worn: Costa Rica

Fit + Free: This is definitely the kit with the most unique fit, style and texturing. To the touch, it is a very soft kit with a square style pattern through the body. Through the sleeves and shoulder, NB use a lot of stitching, which gives natural structure through the area. But it also results in a pull in the jersey as you raise your hands in the air – to celebrate of course. The neck cut is rounded, so it creates a tight fit and makes the kit a little less breathable.

Errea

Jersey Worn: Iceland
Key Feature: Made with a breathable double-knit fabric, with mesh inserts on the sides.

Fit + Feel: There is no real tech advertised with the Errea kit. But in reality, I think that proves to be a positive. Simply put, this has the fit, cut and feel of a pub worn jersey. In other words, it is ideal for fans that want a kit they can wear around the town and not really wear to play in. The design is stylish, and there is a relaxed fit across the shoulders into the chest area. Length wise, it is a little shorter than the other kits, which might be a problem if you have a beer belly to cover. But for your standard fan out there, it comes down just below the belt buckle.

Umbro

Countries: Peru, Serbia

Jersey Worn: Peru

Retail: $90 (see available Umbro Jerseys)

Fit: This is the one jersey on the list that has a replica price but an official game jersey fit. In other words, it fits very snug right across the body. If you are pretty athletic and want a true form fitting jersey, it makes an ideal choice. But if you have any kind of Dad bod, it is probably not a jersey you are going to want. Going up a size might be a better option, but I can’t guarantee the fit will be too much looser. One other note about this kit, the sash that runs across the body actually has a thick seem inside the jersey that isn’t all that comfortable. Normally on kits, the join between materials is cut specifically to avoid any discomfort. But for some reason Umbro has taken a different approach, something that is compounded by the tight fit.

We are in the midst of an important transitional phase for US soccer. The next wave of men’s players have been set the task of getting the federation back on track, performing at the highest level of international soccer. Nike has created two pretty slick new kits, home and away, to add some style to on-field performance. n reality, this would have been an absolutely perfect set of kits to showcase in Russia, sadly that of course won’t be the case. But we are going to see plenty of them through the summer as it will be worn by both the men’s and women’s team.

Among the core values that make the federation special is the motto, “One Nation, One Team.” Since 2014, this unifying phrase has defined the United States Soccer Federation; in its 2018 collection, the words are emblazoned on the inner neck of both the new home and away kits. There, the adage forms a distinct starting point for a set of uniforms that will see both the women’s and men’s teams through initial qualifying stages for the next major international tournaments.

Home Kit Details

The stripes on the home kit shift from red to blue. The diagonal flow of the blue forms an abstract sash, a subtle ode to a regular design element in U.S. kits through the ages. This modern interpretation of the American Flag represents speed.

A stylized version of the American eagle, complete with 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies, forms the unique inner pride graphic on the 2018 USA home jersey.

A second statement is made through the custom name and number set for the federation. The typography is inspired by muscle car emblems and features crisp racing stripes and an inset star pattern.

Away Kit Details

While the inspiration of the home kit is grounded, the away kit reflects excitement in embracing the unknown through gesture to space travel (most notable in the inner pride badge) and sleek, negative shaping of the stripes.

A second statement is made through the custom name and number set for the federation. The typography is inspired by muscle car emblems and features crisp racing stripes and an inset star pattern.

A custom USA icon graphic inspired by NASA Space Mission badges appears on inside neckline of the 2018 USA away shirt, inspiring inner pride.

Other key features of both kits include:

adidas has jumped into World Cup mode, with the release of 9 away kits that will be worn by qualified nations this summer. With the adidas Soccer mantra of authenticity to progression at the heart of each design, the kits have been inspired by jerseys of the past or iconic landmarks, while also featuring the latest adidas product innovations.

For adidas, the World Cup has always been the stage to showcase some of our most iconic products, innovations and designs. Many of these classic designs remain hugely popular with fans, and we want to continue to celebrate them while introducing new innovations, combining authenticity with progression.

Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Sweden are the countries treated to new kits.

The away kit for the current FIFA World Cup holders Germany is a modern interpretation of the famous green 1990 World Cup away jersey worn in the semi-final vs. England. The graphic on the front takes inspiration from the pattern on the Germany home kit while a new collar execution with a two-fabric component construction incorporates the shirt’s graphic, along with the official “DIE MANNSCHAFT” wording on the back.

Host nation Russia’s away kit is a celebration of the country’s street soccer scene and is a combination of two key elements. The white jersey features a unique grey graphic depicting an abstract vision of Russian architecture and pays homage to the architectural landmarks and industrial cities of the country.

The Argentina away kit will see the team take to the pitch in black for the first time in the AFA’s history. The Spain away shirt features a new and unique color combination. Colombia’s striking blue away jersey features a bold graphic inspired by traditional scarf patterns worn by Colombians for special occasions. With the World Cup only a few months away, new kits to be worn in Russia are coming quick and fast. There is no doubt Puma would have loved to have Italy lead the release of their new “All White” kit release. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be. But there is a fresh Italian shirt included in the this high profile international ten pack. Unified by color, each shirt celebrates the elementary design features of each Federation; including badge, flag or iconography, allowing the supporting nation to shine through.

Under one design language, PUMA has created a kit design story that is clean, stylish and free of distractions.
