As we head towards the end of what has been a fascinating 2023 in the boot world, it seems like a good time to pay a revisit to a standout contender that we tested earlier this year; the Nike Air Zoom Mercurial Superfly. These boots have not only stepped but leaped into the spotlight, showcasing a vibrant “Hyper Turquoise/Fuchsia Dream” colorway. As a dazzling member of Nike’s innovative “Peak Ready” Pack, they’re crafted to boost both the performance and aesthetics of players who aren’t afraid to shine on the pitch.

But there’s more to these cleats than their eye-catching appearance. From the moment I unboxed them, I was struck by their unique blend of style and substance. The Nike Air Zoom Mercurial Superfly doesn’t just look good; it’s packed with features that transform how you play the game. Innovative design elements like the articulated, three-quarter length Zoom airbag, nestled directly inside the boot’s plate, and the upgraded Vaporposite+ upper material, combine to offer a playing experience that’s as swift and responsive as it is comfortable.

But what makes these cleats more than just a stunning visual treat?

Let’s break down their game-changing features in a quick hitting, summary style!

Nike Zoom Mercurial Superfly Peak Ready Pack Unboxing

Initial Reaction: Nike has revolutionized the Mercurial design, incorporating innovative elements that redefine performance. These boots are visually striking, raising expectations for on-field dynamism.

Breaking In/Comfort: Surprisingly comfortable right out of the box – a refreshing change for the typically snug-fitting Mercurial series. Features like the pliable speed cage and Vaporposite+ upper material contribute to an unexpectedly comfortable fit.

Vaporposite+ Upper Material: A significant upgrade from the previous generation, offering a responsive and tactile experience. This thinner yet durable material enhances ball control at high speeds.

Touch, Control, Shooting: The boots provide a natural feel and clean touch, thanks to the innovative upper. Ideal for players who love to dribble at speed and score goals.

3/4 Zoom Airbag: A revolutionary addition providing a noticeable difference in performance. This feature offers a springy underfoot feel, enhancing movement and creating separation on the field.

Mid Cut Collar: Comfortably fits around the ankle, although it may take a bit of effort to put on and take off initially. Consistent with previous Superfly editions in fit and feel.

Soleplate and Traction: Aggressive Tri-star stud design offers multidirectional traction, perfect for quick changes in direction. However, it may not suit those who prefer a more conservative stud configuration.

Fit: Accommodates a wider range of foot types than previous Mercurials. Suitable for players with medium to wide feet, and potentially a game-changer for those who found previous versions too narrow.

Summary: the Nike Air Zoom Mercurial Superfly, with its stunning new colorway and advanced features, is currently one of the top options we recommend to players who want advanced tech and quality on foot feel. From its comfortable fit to its innovative design elements like the Zoom Airbag and Vaporposite+ upper, these boots are engineered for players who demand the best in performance and style.

As a critic who has been tough on the Mercurial line in the past, I’m excited to declare these among my all-time favorite boots in the series. They’re more than just a visual statement; they’re a testament to Nike’s commitment to innovation and player performance.

Something that Nike has become really good at is producing high performing mid-tier silo options. Case in point, the latest Phantom GX Pro that provides control focused performance in an affordably priced package. Dressed in stealth black, this version features a low cut knit collar that is built into the overall design, providing a snug locked-in feel. The upper also features an intricate pattern that impacts touch on the ball.

Unusually, the Phantom GX Elite has been slow to transition into the US market. Pairs are only now starting to ship from big retailers. As a result, it has given us extended time with the Phantom GX Pro, allowing us to really get to know them before checking out the Elite level model. And I’ll be honest, if these are anything to go by and the Elite model is even better, they are a boot that sit among the top available right now!

Nike Phantom GX Pro (2)

Nike Phantom GX Pro Fingerprint Upper

Nike Phantom GX Pro Fingerprint Pattern

What does the GX Pro have on offer?

Let’s start with the upper. From the midfoot through forefoot, it is a NikeSkin material that sits on top of a textured underlayer. The actual texturing has a fingerprint type pattern, with individual strands running across the upper. Another good way of describing the pattern is like a high or a low pressure system that you would see on a weather forecast. The actual center sits across the instep, and each pressure bar stretches out from that point. To the touch, it is unlike any boot we have seen released before, with each ripple gently ridged up across the pliable NikeSkin material. You can easily tell that the material is a synthetic, but it molds and folds just like a leather, providing a super natural touch on the ball. Coupled with the texturing, it plays out wonderfully well on the ball.

Underfoot, the traction system follows the same pattern found on the Elite model, just with a slightly toned down plate. Tri-star studs work with forefoot flex grooves to provide optimal traction and help unlock change of direction. It is pretty aggressive plate that definitely grips the surface when looking to make dynamic movements on the pitch. In play, you can feel the agility focus, where the studs provide slightly different sensations depending on which part of the soleplate (and which particular stud) leaves the surface first. For some, it might be a little too aggressive, creating over bite that could be problematic if you have ankle issues.

Fit and Comfort

In terms of actual fit and comfort, they are pretty dreamy! Right out of the box, the Phantom GX Pro is very pliable, offering a natural fit and ease of wear from the very beginning. I’d rate them as being a snug true to size, not ideal for wide fitting players but perfect for those that want something the creates an “as one” connection with your foot. Over time, the upper will provide some stretch but nothing overly dramatic. They are not an ideal option for wide fitting players, so if you find them to be pretty tight from first wear I would move to another option.

From my experience, they fit my medium/wide foot pretty well. They did feel snug from first wear with not a lot ofwiggle room, but I enjoyed the overall shape that closes in around the toes. Note the shape in the bottom images where I have them on foot. Inside the shoe, they felt very comfortable, with the forefoot cavity providing a smooth surface area and the heel having enough padding to reduce any possibility of discomfort.

Something else I really appreciate is the raised edge or lip that Nike has placed on the soleplate just around the forefoot. It adds additional durability in an area that frequently separates, especially while playing on turf. It is a simple modification that can add value to the lifespan of the boots.

Nike Phantom GX Pro Heel Design

“Nike Pro cleats are for the pinpoint passer who can curl the ball around the defense and the inventive, yet elusive yo-yo dribbler who has the ball on a string. Your game is all about precision, making the plays that matter most.”

As mid-tier boots go, these could be one of the top options you will find on the market right now! Nike realizes the importance of keeping players in the $150 price range happy, so they have dreams of one day owning an elite level silo in the range. It is a simple but genius move; ensure your mid-tier performs at a high level and you can corner a huge part of the player market. Having worn them over a dozen times to date, I’d definitely recommend these as a solid game option for players who are on a budget.

We have already seen several colorways released to market in pretty quick succession, both in the DF and regular cut versions. Some are already shipping, while others have been introduced before they are ready to ship.

Dressed in space purple, the World Cup edition Nike Tiempo Legend 9, released as part of the Generation Pack, became one of the best colorway releases of 2022.  And we managed to get our hands on a pair before they eventually sell out!

Nike designed this one to celebrate the game’s biggest competition, ignited by the “science of connectivity and gravity” that the world stage inspires. Featuring a stunning futuristic look made for the globe’s greatest players, these cleats have raised textures backed by soft foam pods for precise dribbling, passing and scoring in 1 of the lightest Tiempos released to date. They also combine the classic touch of leather with the attest cutting edge technology.

Nike Tiempo Legend 9 Elite Q K-leather upper

Nike Tiempo Legend 9 Elite Q World Cup

There are also several special symbols around the design that make them different to other models, for example a nod to the host’s whereabouts, as well as Nike’s WHQ coordinates and emblems that speak to the science of connected energy. You will find them along the heel area.

In terms of touch, a premium kangaroo leather upper is backed by soft foam pods that allow you to receive the ball with ease and place your shots and passes with precision. Nike use a redesigned rose gold colored plate underfoot, it boasts a new stud layout specially designed for quicker cuts and sharper stops. Combined, they help reduce the boot’s weight down to just 7.3 oz.

Immediately fan attention has focused on how these have a very CTR360 style design, bringing back a wave of nostalgia for what was a fan favorite. And maybe that played on the minds of the Nike design team, as they looked to incorporate some key elements from the former control boot. In reality, it makes sense, as Nike look to take the Tiempo Legend in a much more modern direction, keeping a traditional leather upper for total comfort and implementing some control pods for improved touch on the ball.

Diadora Brasil Elite Tech Soccer Cleats

If you are craving a more traditional style boot that oozes modern simplicity, what could be better than the “Made in Italy” Diadora Brasil Elite Tech FG? We are talking a boot that combine the luxury feel and iconic design elements of 1990’s Diadora boots with cutting-edge lightweight tech.

The stealth black upper is a premium leather that transitions into a synthetic material in the ankle area. Across the forefoot, Diadora has added cross stitching to create a ridged texturing. Visually, it offers an unmistakably classic appearance that we don’t see on many modern releases. But it also serves a dual performance purpose. First, it helps ensure the leather provides more natural stretch over time while enhancing durability. And second, It also creates extra definition on the ball, so there is an added level of grip as you control and dribble across the pitch. It is needed considering the thin nature of the upper materials. I’ll be honest, it is the most ridged forefoot I have seen in a long time, with Diadora really creating a series of up-and-down rolling hills. Traditionalists rejoice!

Diadora Brasil Elite Tech LPX

Diadora Brasil Elite Tech LPX Upper Stitching

Underfoot you will find an all-new soleplate design that features teardrop studs for improved rotational traction and straight-line speed on firm ground surfaces. This also plays out really well on turf surfaces, with very minimal drag and the ability to cut and chop with confidence. Right out of the box, there is plenty of flex and natural movement from the soleplate, so you can feel confident wearing them right after you get them.

Diadora Brasil Elite Tech LPX Classic Tongue Cover

When it comes to fit, they are incredibly accommodating and can easy to consider a very decent option for any player in need of a wider fitting boot. The forefoot cavity is spacious, while the upper material has plenty of natural stretch to adjust to your foot shape.

When we reference “cutting edge lightweight technology”, we should point out that they weigh in a very competitive 7oz. It isn’t anywhere near the lightest boots we have seen released, but it is extremely light for a traditional release with a leather upper. You can tell where the material has been trimmed back when you hold them. The upper is paper thin around the midfoot, while the soleplate has a compact design. It adds an element that differentiates them from other boots currently on the market.

Diadora Brasil OG LT+

As one of the most consistent brands on the market, Diadora are a leader in producing high quality, traditional style boots. I’ve always appreciated their ability to stay true to their morals by continually delivering truly classy releases. Case in point this latest version of Brasil OG LT+ that features an incredible metallic silver upper colorway. Talk about a standout design!

Rather than your standard run of the mill release, this is a boot intended to announce the quality of one of the market’s most iconic boots. Built using the same manufacturing quality and materials as the original Brasil, this “Made in Italy” production evokes a real life connection to their namesake.

“Hand made from the very beginning, and that is a key aspect here, the Brasil is one of the few timeless classics that are always on the top of the quality list. Master craftsmen in Montebelluna, Italy use techniques that have long since been forgotten to create this golden slipper. What you get in return is one of the most comfortable, softest, and highest quality cleats you can find.”

Silver Diadora Brasil OG LT+

Silver Diadora Brasil OG LT+ premier leather upper

To my California friends – rejoice! These feature a premium leather upper (no K-Leather) so they can be ordered and shipped to Cali. I know that is something that has caused disappointment in the past for fans who have a strong connection with the more traditional style brand.

That premium leather upper is a supple calfskin that is enhanced by a very thin and shiny silver upper layer. It creates an unmistakable look that is ready for those tournament days when are ready to pick up silverware. Bonus of having a waterproof treatment also included, so they can be worn in all weather conditions.

Being that this is a more traditional style boot, you might expect that they’d be best suited to central style players with a defensive mindset. They are built to last, provide a little extra padding for getting stuck in on tackles, and basically fit a no-nonsense mold. But, I also feel they have plenty to offer attacking style players. We are not talking quick, pacey wingers here but more about players in need of a reliable striking boot. The construction of the forefoot provides a great region for striking clean shots without feeling the full impact. The central lacing system does run pretty low on the boot, so it is not quite the perfect strike zone, but it is clean enough to give you a nice area to focus on connecting with the ball. As you dribble with the ball, you get decent feel, but the role of the stitching is to allow for some padding and this does take away from what you might call natural touch.

Limited Edition Silver Diadora Brasil

How do they Fit?

The term I’d use to describe the fit is “natural”. Right around the foot they are form-fitting, very much a snug style boot with the benefit of having a super soft leather upper that mimics your foot shape over time. Up towards the toe, they have a little extra space. I’ve debated a little over whether to recommend a half-size down in size, but I’m still on the fence. They provide about a finger width extra as compared to a true to size, so basically, if you want a complete snug fit, go down a half-size. But if you prefer a little extra room so your toes are not pressed up against the front of the boot, stay with your normal size. Width wise, they are a medium-wide fit that should accommodate a wide variety of players thanks to a little extra stretch from the leather.

Traction + Soleplate

As you’d expect with an old school remake like these, the soleplate holds a traditional feel. Think of a soleplate you’d find on a pair of Pantofola boots, Ryal, or even the eternally classic Copa Mundial. Well, this is the style found on the Brasil Italy, with a comfort outsole and 12 fixed conical studs helping to make every turn and touch stable and fixed. Whether you play on AG of FG, this is the type of soleplate that provides reliability as you play. You stay well grounded, with the multiple studs ensuring there is little slip unless you plan on wearing them on soft ground.

Are they Worth the Money?

Listed at $280, these are going to be a serious investment for any soccer player out there. That might prove to be the major stumbling point when it comes to this particular release. However, Diadora has done an exceptional job of putting pure quality into everything these boots have on offer. The box, paper wrap, boot bag and the boots themselves are next level, you get a royal feeling when unboxing them for the first time. And since we are somewhat devoid of true classic boots on the market right now, there is huge potential for a release like this.

If you want a complete heritage style package with glorious upper design on a boot that is tried and trusted, this is one that is absolutely worth considering!

adidas Predator EDGE+ Edge of Darkness

When we talk about elite level releases that come with a high profile and heavy expectations, the adidas Predator EDGE+ is one of the first silos that comes to mind. Holding that iconic Predator name adds significant pressure on the shoulders of the EDGE, with a tiered rubberized ribs along the upper and a laceless collar style creating a visual standout. This is the boot you will see a lot of pro players wearing in games, as adidas look to highlight the range on pitch.

If you have heard us talk about the Predator EDGE.1, you will know that there is a lot to be desired from the modern hybrid power/control silo. The all important question then is how does the EDGE+ compare and can you expect them to perform any differently?

Here we take a look at how they actually compare and talk about some of their key features!

adidas Predator EDGE+ Edge of Darkness Upper Design

adidas Predator EDGE+ Collar Design

Predator EDGE+ vs EDGE.1

There is 1 significant difference between both releases – laces! Like most top-tier releases, adidas has removed the laces from EDGE+ and raised the price by $30. It is a wild and weird concept that we have become familiar with over time. A brand chooses to take away the option to tighten the boots but increases the retail price from $250 to $280.

Personally, I prefer having the option and ability to be able to tighten up based on how I want them to fit. But, I realize there are players that enjoy the laceless sensation and opportunity to play without having to stress about lacing up. It all comes to down to your own experience and expectations from the fit.

But, note that this is the only significant performance difference between both versions of EDGE. Internally, the fit and shape is the same. Across the upper, all of the upper components exist in the same fashion. And the same traction system is used.

Predator Silo – Changing Dynamics

Over the past few years, we have seen different directions taken with the Predator as adidas adjusted to market changes. First, they decided to retire the iconic silo around 2015, before making a dramatic u-turn and reintroducing it to the market in 2018. That 2018 version didn’t seem to hold the true DNA of a Predator style release, instead featuring a tiered dampening style structure across the forefoot. It was the Predator MUTATOR and FREAK, along with their DEMONSKIN upper, that really started to raise excitement levels again.

With the Predator EDGE, adidas decided to take things in another new direction, mimicking a previous versions upper tech (Predator LZ) while introducing a next generation fit. If you are looking for a summary of this review here it is: I just don’t think adidas got this one right, and considering their own high expectations I’m really confused at how this end product made it to market!

ZONE SKIN Upper

Adidas has gone with strategically positioned rubberized ribs across the forefoot, engineered into four “control zones” across the instep and toe box. The obvious purpose is to optimize ball manipulation, giving players a powerful edge and a little extra pop when striking the ball. if we are exclusively talking about these zones, they do add a noticeable amount of grip on the ball and ensure you get some added ping off the surface as you strike shots. They not only look like the Predator LZ, but the overall performance in terms of feel on the ball is very comparable. The only real difference lies in how pliable the upper material feels on the Pred LZ compared to the stiffer Pred Edge.

PRIMEKNIT Mid-Cut Collar

There is a very unique cut to the mid-cut collar. It is a premium two-piece PRIMEKNIT material designed for breathable comfort, easy step in, and secure lock down. And I’d agree that it serves its purpose very well. They are a relatively easy boot to slip your foot into, one of the best when it comes to options with a higher collar. And it really hugs the ankle well, providing a soft and secure fit thanks to its stretch fit. It leads into an off center set lacing system, something else that plays off real well. Some prefer a laceless fit, I generally prefer to have laces so that I can dictate how tight the boots feel on foot. If it something you are interested, they could definitely be worn with the laces taken out.

Traction and Soleplate

Underfoot, Adidas has changed things up by including a new FACET FRAME. It is intended to provide stability and dynamic traction. The all-new soleplate construction features a weighted forefoot piece that redistributes weight toward the front of the boot, optimizing power transfer when striking the ball. This is one of the additions that increases the overall weight of the boot – the Predator EDGE weighs in over 9oz making it one of the heaviest boots on the market at the moment.

Final Note – Fit!

When it comes to fit, length wise they are true to size. And in width, they offer a decently wide forefoot cavity. I’d actually compare them as being one of the better wide fitting options currently on the market. Just note that the internal structure won’t adjust or stretch over time. So, what you get from first wear is what you can expect over the life of the boot.

Puma King Platinum VEGAN

If you are interested in a boot made entirely from animal-free materials, PUMA has released one called the KING Platinum 21 Vegan. The forward-thinking, future-conscious new boot retains the KING signature style, touch and comfort but adds a special new spin. What does it mean to be a Vegan boot? Well, it means that it is created from animal-free products. That includes a super-soft 100% Vegan leather and 100% Vegan knitted yarns for exceptional fit and comfort. PUMA continues to strive for more sustainable and eco-friendly products.

We are on the tail end of this release, but we still wanted to cover some of the more important aspects of what they have on offer and how they feel to play in. Best part is that remaining pairs are on sale right now, well worth exploring at SOCCER.com.

Puma King Platinum 21 “Vegan” Upper

Puma King Platinum 21 “Vegan” KINGForm

Performance wise, the KING Platinum 21 Vegan integrates exclusive KINGForm technology – a rib structure that fuses to the Vegan leather upper in key contact areas to deliver a responsiveness players expect. Starting out, they are definitely stiff on foot and it takes some time to naturally stretch the materials.

I spent some time wearing them in practice before wearing them in a game to really loosen them up. It helped, but they definitely take a little longer to break-in than your typical release. The rib structure has a very valid use, adding extra definition in key contact areas. When you combine it with the lighter diamond pattern across the upper, it really enhances touch and control. That is one aspect that played out really well!

Puma KING Platinum Vegan Fit and Design

Underfoot, PUMA use a super lightweight PEBA soleplate that is built around a stability spine to provide optimal traction and support. This is most useful for dynamic movements without the use of any animal-based adhesives. I’ve got to say, this change in sole design does creates some unexpected stiffness. There is no natural bend out of the box, so it is another area that takes time to adjust to. Additionally, they feature multi-directional conical studs for enhanced agility on both FG and TF. I’d rate them as a solid option on both surfaces. Inside, a molded sock liner sits on the footbed with NanoGrip technology to ensure superior energy transmission, cushioning and anti-slip properties.

Because of the style of materials used through the upper and soleplate, they are a slightly heavy release, dropping in above 9oz. That is substantially higher than some recent PUMA KING releases and is worth keeping in mind!

Are they worth buying?

Ultimately, this is a milestone release for PUMA that begins their journey of using Vegan friendly materials and offering an alternative to animal-based leather products. Performance wise, there is still a lot of work to do to make them a competitive performer. After breaking them in, I could wear them comfortably. But, being realistic they are not going to end up in my boot rotation. They will end up being a pair that are worn, tested and passed on to someone else to try. For what they are, they are worth exploring, but they don’t compete with other similar priced options.

Price wise is where you can find some added value right now, if you are interested in seeing what they have on offer for yourself. Currently, you can find the Ivory Glow + Green Glare colorway – which is an incredible sharp looking combo, by the way – available on sale for $130 (down from $200) at SOCCER.com.

Adler Yatagarashu FG Boot Review

It is always fun to be able to check out a new pair of boots firsthand from brands trying to make a fresh splash on the market, especially when said boots are sent over directly from Japan! In this case, it is Adler who has unleashed a 2022 rebrand, dropping an entire line-up of luxury boots in their home country.

First thing, lets learn a little about the brand.

Adler is a Japanese sports manufacturer that has established itself as a brand specializing in Soccer boots over the past half century. “Simple” is best. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. The classic and orthodox design that can continue to be a universal presence. “Made in Japan” boot are finished by Japanese craftsmen, one pair at a time, with the skill and care of a master.

After raving about the quality each release had on offer, fellow boot enthusiast Gaijin Boot Blog sent over a pair of Adler Yatagarashu so we could get an up-close look at them ourselves!

Adler Yatagarashu FG K-Leather Upper

Adler Yatagarashu FG Upper Details

If there is one thing you read from here, it has to be this; putting on a pair of Yatagarashu for the first time is like slipping your feet into a warm pair of slippers after walking on concrete barefoot on a frosty winters night. They are simply incredible right out of the box. You feel like a king putting them on as they mold right around your feet. They are built using a quilted kangaroo leather that is incredibly supple and stretches along your foot as it is worn.

There are other simple, signature features on them that the Adler has directly outlined and highlighted. Like, for example, the lace holes that are designed to easily adjust the fit and make use of the flexibility of the kangaroo leather. And the strategic stitching pattern across the entire upper is designed to produce a slight rigidity that is consistent throughout the boots.

Underfoot, things seem like they are old school and basic, but there is a lot more going on that you see. For example, you will find a KaRVO fiber and shank that helps reduce excessive bending and twisting in the mid and rear of the footbed, minimizing fatigue buildup and maximizing continued performance through wear. The urethane synthetic resin outsole does have a simple structure that provides excellent flexibility and allows for light and flexible movement. In other twist, we have discovered that the “Stitch Down Mackay Method” is used to sew together the sole using a special high-strength polyarylate fiber thread used in bulletproof vests.

In reality, with all the modern still release on the market this might not be the type of release that most players will seek out. But there are the purists out there who crave modern classics and the simpler side of the game. These are the traditionalists who thrive on crafter k-leather designs built with quality in mind. If you are one of these players, then you now have a new option to check out and research – having experienced them myself, I can assure you that they won’t disappoint!

To see more of the brand and their boots, head to Adler Japan.

Nike Mercurial Superfly 8 Progress Pack

Over the past few months, we saw the Nike ‘Progress Pack’ be worn in the knockout stages of both the men’s and women’s Champions League. They became the colorway to be worn toward the end of the season, especially this Mercurial Superfly 8 edition, as players looked to make an impact in the biggest games. We wanted to take one more look at the silo up-close before Nike moves on to the next generation

Visually, the off white upper features blueprint style print that highlights key areas of the boot. Nike has engineered this version of Superfly with the minimal amount of materials possible, so players can feel lights on their feet for 90 minutes. The stripped-down Flyknit upper delivers a distraction-free feel, while reducing weight in the process. Around the forefoot, Nike implemented a new Speed Band to keep your foot locked in the boot and and ready for all important moments when you need to accelerate at speed.

Nike Superfly Avail Q Upper

A top layer called “Avail Q”, a new microfiber application that adds a tactile surface, is used across the upper for better ball control at high speeds. This falls right in line with what you expect from the iconic speed silo, allowing you to keep the ball close to your foot with an enhanced level of feel.

Nike use a Dynamic Fit collar around the ankle to keep you locked in during games. It has plenty of stretch, so they are not difficult to get on foot like some other DF boots have been in the past. There is also an interior heel cushioning for secure, game-long comfort, while NikeGrip technology on the insole prevents your foot from sliding around. Out of the box, the fit is surprisingly forgiving and easy to wear, definitely a little unexpected for a Mercurial release!

Nike Superfly 14 Soleplate and Traction

Nike Aerotrak 2 soleplate

Underfoot, Nike use a forward thinking Nike Aerotrak 2 soleplate that is all about speed, with specially designed grooves for explosive acceleration. Chevron studs provide instant multidirectional traction for quicker cuts at high speed on firm ground surfaces. I’ve worn them on both FG and Turf with positive results, you get a natural feel and level of traction through play. The best boots are the ones you don’t have to think about during play (they don’t distract) and that is how I found them to be.

In terms of weight, this edition of Superfly drops in at a lightweight 7.2oz, which falls in line with most recent Superfly releases. The only difference is the modifications to this version, these are definitely the best performing version we’ve seen in several generations.

Nike Mercurial Superfly 8 Boot Review

In terms of fit, they are a Mercurial release, so you won’t be surprised to hear the design is narrow compared to other Nike boots on the market. But, I’d actually rate them as being more accommodating through the forefoot than previous Mercurial releases. Having a knit material through the lacing really adds that extra stretch as you put them on. It means that more players will be able to consider them as their next boot option! Consider them as a true to size option length wise, with a comfortable medium width that stretches to suit a medium-wide fit comfortably.

And if you need anymore reason to like them, they come with one of the best boot bags I’ve seen Nike include with recent releases. It features a multi-dimensional Mercurial logo with iconic Swoosh, just like what is found on the lateral and instep of the actual boots.

adidas GAMEMODE Knit Edition

The GAMEMODE series is adidas’ way of allowing players to express their love for the game of soccer through their own style. Made with a series of recycled materials, the knit upper on this colorway features at least 50% recycled content, and its colorway officially listed as Wonder Mauve.

Let me start by explaining how GAMEMODE is basically the reincarnation of the F30 adiZero series, but rather than synthetic this version features a knit upper! For those not familiar with the adiZero line-up, the F30 was the takedown or mid-tier model that retailed around the $120-$140 range during their life on the market. They were seen as a value for money option when a budget was in play. When we compare GAMEMODE and F30 side-by-side, they have a lot in common and that bodes well for their $99 price point.

adidas GAMEMODE Knit Upper Performance

GAMEMODE Knit Upper and Collar

In creating the silo, adidas focused on comfort and simple playability, looking to design a shoe that fits a wide range of foot shapes. Their is nothing overtly complicated about them, they feature a one-piece upper and a flat but versatile outsole. On foot, they do have a very basic feel. There are boots that offer extra padding or protection inside the boots, but the GAMEMODE doesn’t feature anything like that. They offer a very accommodating fit, wide through the forefoot with stretch thanks to the knit upper. In terms of length, they are true to size.

In terms of materials, the upper does feature a very thin overlay that keeps the knit bonded and in shape. Again, it does have some stretch to it but you don’t need to worry about it overstretching, and the overlay adds to the durability on offer. Around the ankle and through the lacing is where you can find the most open area of knit. It has some serious stretch through those areas since it doesn’t have the same thin synthetic overlay. So, if you want to see how much stretch is actually in the knit, this is where you can find out. It adds a high level of comfort since it conforms to your foot shape when you put them on.

adidas GAMEMODE FG review

adidas GAMEMODE on foot

Underfoot is the one area where I was underwhelmed when it came to performance. The one piece soleplate doesn’t have any natural bend when you take them out of the box, so it takes time to break them in. You can see in the images how it runs flat from toe to heel. I’d actually describe it as being somewhat cumbersome, a little bland and sluggish in play. Most of the weight seems to sit in the soleplate too, so they are bottom heavy. For some, that might prove useful to keep you balanced on the surface, but I personally prefer something lighter that compliments pace and acceleration.

In terms of the type of fields where they can be used, I actually rate them as best on turf surfaces. The low profile configuration provides adequate traction on artificial surfaces without any over bite, so you feel mobile in play. They are also solid on FG, making them a good option for players that regularly play on both types of surface.

adidas has definitely decided that GAMEMODE is going to be a creative playground, where they can make and release unique, small batch designs at a pricepoint that can reach a lot of fans. This knit version is currently available for $99.99.

Or you can find the entire GAMEMODE line-up available at SOCCER.com.
